This Week in TUXEDO OS #05-2026

2026-01-30 17:59:12

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

This week, This Week in TUXEDO OS starts with a rather unusual but no less serious topic: the future of the Linux kernel. Linux creator and lead developer Linus Torvalds recently described the kernel community as gray and old – himself included, of course. Even though the 56-year-old shows no signs of retiring after nearly 35 years at the helm, it seems the motto is clear: better safe than a panic merge.

A contingency plan documented on GitHub now defines how Linus Torvalds or other key maintainers could be replaced in an emergency, ensuring continuity and stability of the Linux kernel. The plan’s name: conclave.rst. Apparently, this is as high-level as Linux gets – though the question remains whether white smoke will ever rise from the Linux Foundation headquarters in San Francisco.

Within clearly defined deadlines, a group of participants from the last Maintainer Summit and the Linux Foundation’s Technical Advisory Board will work out options for managing the top-level kernel repository, securing the long-term health of the project and its community.

After this strategic outlook, we return to practical topics as usual. In the current issue, we introduce Tellico, a KDE application for collection management that has been maintained for over 20 years. We also explain the new Firefox default settings in TUXEDO OS 147.0.2 that improve privacy and further refine integration with the KDE desktop environment.

Enjoy reading,
The TUXEDO OS Team

KDE App of the Week: Tellico – Keep Your Collections in Order

This week, we’re featuring Tellico, a well-maintained application for managing all kinds of collections for over 20 years. Even without the typical „K“ in its name, it is a full-fledged KDE app built on Qt and the KDE frameworks.

Tellico covers many use cases right out of the box – from books, movies, music, and video games to comics, stamps, coins, board games, or wine. You can also create custom collection types with freely definable fields for text, images, dates, checkboxes, or URLs.

For Collectors

Tellico shines when it comes to import and export: it can read metadata from MODS, BibTeX, RIS, CSV, or PDF, and export data to BibTeX, ONIX, CSV, or HTML. You can also pull content directly from online sources like Amazon, IMDb, PubMed, CrossRef, or via z39.50 and SRU servers.

Tellico is a versatile collection manager with numerous predefined templates, while offering plenty of flexibility to create custom collection types and freely define individual fields.

For audio collections, Tellico can fetch CDDB data and automatically scan audio files in formats such as MP3 or OGG. A built-in lending feature helps you keep track of items you’ve lent out.

Installation

Tellico is not preinstalled in TUXEDO OS but is available in the Discover software shop as a Debian package or Flatpak. Alternatively, you can install it via the terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install tellico

The TUXEDO repository currently offers version 4.1.1, while Flathub provides newer releases. Version 4.1.5 was recently published – the last release supporting both Plasma 5 and the new Plasma 6.

Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Privacy and KDE Integration in Firefox

With the update to Firefox 147.0.2 in TUXEDO OS, our developers have adjusted several default settings. The goal is to enhance privacy protection against Mozilla and to integrate Firefox more seamlessly into the system. These changes are applied automatically whenever a new Firefox profile is created – such as when setting up a new TUXEDO device or adding a new user. Users with existing profiles can, however, apply the changes manually.

Improved KDE Integration with Native File Dialogs

Firefox does not rely on external UI toolkits like GTK or Qt for its interface, but on its own technologies. The interface is mainly built using XUL (XML User Interface Language) along with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Mozilla’s Quantum engine powers the browser core. This approach simplifies cross-platform development but can limit seamless desktop integration.

On Linux, there is now a simple solution – at least for file dialogs. You may have noticed that Firefox under TUXEDO OS does not use KDE’s native file dialogs by default and does not recognize Dolphin’s bookmarks. This can be fixed in a few steps. Open the advanced configuration via about:config, confirm the security warning, and search for the key widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.file-picker. Change its value from 2 to 1.

With the previous setting, Firefox used a more GNOME-style file dialog, which did not fully integrate KDE bookmarks, network shares, or removable drives.

After the adjustment, Firefox uses the native KDE file dialog, including access to removable drives, network shares, and bookmarks maintained in the Dolphin file manager.

Better Zoom Behavior for PDFs

Firefox’s PDF features are more powerful than many users realize. The built-in viewer allows not only viewing PDFs but also adding annotations, text, drawings, and comments. Filling out and signing PDF forms is also possible – without printing or scanning again. Mozilla provides detailed documentation for these features, for example here or here.

In TUXEDO OS, we have also set pdfjs.defaultZoomValue to auto, so PDFs automatically fit the width of the browser window. On very wide displays, the option pdfjs.spreadModeOnLoad with a value of 2 can be useful. It ensures the first page displays alone, while subsequent pages appear as double pages – ideal for magazines or books.

Please check for any details with your local customs or tax authorities before ordering! But as a benefit you don't have to pay German taxes, this means you save up to 19%!
