This Week in TUXEDO OS #41-2025

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

The developer penguins in our TUX colony in the sunny south are celebrating the successes of their colleagues far up north: Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northernmost state, has migrated its email system from Microsoft Exchange to Open-Xchange and Thunderbird migrated – over 40,000 mailboxes with more than 100 million emails and calendar entries. Around 30,000 employees are now venturing into the world of free software, while Windows is gradually being replaced by Linux across the state administration. In this week’s TWIX, we’re not turning the big wheel: we introduce Ark and share tips for the KDE file manager Dolphin.

KDE App of the Week: Manage Archives Easily with Ark

Many files you download from the internet come compressed and need to be unpacked before use. In KDE, this task has been handled since 1998 by the trusted program Ark. To this day, Ark remains the standard solution on the Plasma desktop for opening, creating, and editing archives.

The application offers a clear graphical interface and supports a wide range of common formats such as ZIP, TAR, RAR, gzip, bzip2, or 7z—provided the corresponding backend programs are installed. Ark acts as a user-friendly frontend for the various compression tools.

Ark’s interface is clean and organized. It gives quick access to all essential functions, making the management and editing of compressed files much easier.

Edit Archives in Just a Few Clicks

When you launch Ark, you immediately see a list of recently opened archives and the main tools for opening or creating new ones. Creating a new archive is straightforward: select the location, name, and archive type, set the compression level, and then fill the archive via drag & drop from the file manager. Some formats also support password protection or multi-part archives.

With just a few clicks, you can set the location, name, and format of your archive. Then simply drag and drop files into the window to add them.

Unpack Directly from the File Manager

Unpacking archives is especially convenient thanks to Ark’s integration with the KDE file manager Dolphin. By right-clicking an archive file and selecting Extract, you can choose where and under what name the contents should be unpacked. This close integration saves time and eliminates the need to open the application manually.

Via the context menu in Dolphin, you can extract archives directly. Just choose the destination, no need to open Ark separately.

Ready to Use on TUXEDO OS

On TUXEDO OS, Ark is fully set up and ready to go. The most common backend programs are preinstalled, so you can start immediately. Additional formats can be enabled in the settings as needed. This eliminates the need to use separate command-line commands for each archive type—Ark provides a modern, convenient interface for the task.

Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Keep Your Desktop Organized

A tidy desktop and a well-organized file system save both time and frustration. In this edition, we highlight three practical features of KDE Plasma and the Dolphin file manager that make your workflow smoother: sticky notes via drag & drop, convenient multi-selection, and useful filters for large directories.

Sticky Notes via Drag & Drop

Want to quickly capture an idea or a line of code? Simply select the text in any application and drag it onto the desktop—an instant “sticky note” is created. This allows you to jot down spontaneous thoughts, to-dos, or short reminders without opening an extra tool. It’s especially handy when juggling multiple projects and keeping track of everything at once.

Drag and drop highlighted text onto the desktop to create a sticky note—a simple way to capture thoughts and notes quickly.

Multi-Selection in Dolphin

Did you know that pressing the spacebar in Dolphin activates selection mode? You can then select multiple files or folders without holding down the Ctrl key. This makes copying, moving, or deleting many files much easier and keeps your workflow smooth—particularly in large directories.

Selection mode in Dolphin lets you mark multiple files with a single click—no Ctrl key needed, reducing effort and speeding up your workflow.

Filtering Files in Dolphin

If a folder contains too many files, the filter bar (activated with Ctrl+I or via the slash with Shift+7) comes in handy. Just type part of the filename or the desired extension, and Dolphin will display only matching results. Click the lock icon next to the field, and Dolphin will keep the filter active even when you change folders—perfect when working regularly with similar file structures.

Dolphin’s filter bar hides unnecessary files and simplifies navigation in large directories—even across multiple folders.
