Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!
This week, we were excited to welcome the new KDE Plasma 6.5 . However, it will still take a little time before we can experience it in TUXEDO OS. The effort for Plasma 6.5 is quite significant this time, as our developer penguins first need to implement the foundations with Qt 6.9 before they can begin integrating Plasma 6.5.x, KDE Frameworks, and KDE Gear. To make the wait a bit easier, this week we take a look at the financial tool Skrooge and some important accessibility features of KDE Plasma.
Enjoy reading,
The TUXEDO OS Team
Note: We would like to keep you updated on the latest developments in TUXEDO OS with the TWIX series and introduce you to exciting applications as well as practical tips related to the KDE desktop and TUXEDO OS. However, this section should not be a one-way street: your feedback, ideas, and suggestions for improvement are very welcome! For this purpose, we have created a thread on Reddit, where you can reach us directly.

KDE App of the Week: Skrooge, the Versatile Personal Finance Tool
This week, we’re introducing Skrooge , a particularly flexible open-source program for managing personal finances on Linux. The name, by the way, comes from Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character in Charles Dickens’ classic" „*A Christmas Carol“ – but Skrooge is decidedly more generous when it comes to handling money.
Overview and Features
Skrooge is a comprehensive yet easy-to-use application, specially designed for KDE Plasma. It caters to both beginners and experienced users, offering everything needed to manage personal finances: from recording income and expenses to budget planning and detailed reporting.
The application supports numerous file formats for import and export, including common banking standards such as OFX, QIF, and CSV. This makes it easy to import data, like bank statements from online banking or accounting software, directly into Skrooge for further processing.
Skrooge offers features for both beginners and advanced users, allowing income, expenses, and budgets to be clearly managed, analyzed, and optimized efficiently.
Powerful Tools for Everyday Use
Skrooge provides a clear, customizable dashboard with quick access to key functions. With its extensive reporting options, income and expenses can be visualized in clear charts and reports—perfect for identifying trends and spotting potential savings.
Other highlights include:
Custom categories and tags for structured transaction management
Advanced filter and search functions for precise analysis
Automation rules for recurring transactions
Multi-currency support , including automatic exchange rate updates
Seamless data exchange thanks to support for numerous banking formats
Installation on TUXEDO OS
Skrooge is not preinstalled in TUXEDO OS but can be easily added via the Discover app store or the terminal:
sudo apt install skrooge
Through Discover , you can also choose whether to install the program as a classic DEB package or as a Flatpak. Flatpak usually provides the latest version faster than traditional package management.
Well-Integrated and Actively Maintained
Skrooge integrates seamlessly with the Plasma desktop but works equally well on other desktop environments. The project is actively developed—currently at version 25.1—and is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3 (GPLv3). Bugs are generally fixed quickly, and new features are regularly added. A comprehensive German-language guide is available in the official manual .
Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.
TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Better Visibility with KDE Plasma Accessibility Features
Good eyesight has unfortunately become rare. According to the Professional Association of German Ophthalmologists , 67 percent of adults in Germany need visual aids. Over 38 percent wear their glasses or contact lenses all the time. From the age of 60, the share of people wearing glasses rises to 91 percent. It is therefore important to pay attention to a good display when buying a laptop—and to adjust the display of fonts and dialogs individually.
However, if glasses alone are not enough, or if occasional extra support is needed while working on a computer, KDE Plasma offers a range of features that make operation easier. These are not only helpful for visual impairments but also practical for screencasts or video presentations. You can find the relevant options in Settings under Window Management » Desktop Effects » Accessibility .
Visualizing Mouse Clicks and Finding the Pointer
Especially during screencasts or screen sharing in video conferences, viewers can sometimes lose sight of the mouse pointer. In such situations, enable the Track Mouse feature. Then hold Meta +Shift , and KDE Plasma draws two rotating semicircles around the pointer.
With Track Mouse, the cursor is clearly highlighted. This helps both viewers and yourself keep track of the pointer on the screen.
It can also be helpful to indicate when a mouse button is pressed. The Mouse Click Animation feature helps with this. After activating it, toggle it with Shift +Meta ++ . When clicking, Plasma then displays visual effects showing which mouse button was pressed—ideal for screencasts or presentations during training.
Mouse Click Animations shows which button was pressed. Perfect for screencasts, presentations, or training sessions on the screen.
Screen Magnification and Magnifier
Also useful in conferences or for users with limited vision are the Magnifier and Zoom plugins. Both enlarge the screen content—but in different ways, so they cannot be active at the same time.
Activate the desired feature in KDE Plasma’s settings and press Meta ++ . Each additional press increases the zoom level. With Magnifier , a rectangular section appears, the size of which can be adjusted in the plugin settings.
The Magnifier highlights details precisely—perfect for reading small text or showing content clearly in presentations.
Zoom , on the other hand, scales the entire screen, with the visible area automatically following the mouse pointer. Use Meta +- to zoom out and Meta +0 to reset the zoom completely.
With full-screen zoom, everything stays in view—the visible area automatically follows the mouse pointer across the entire screen.
