KDE App of the Week: The Lightweight Photo Viewer Fotos

This week, we’d like to introduce the rather unknown application Photos, which many may still remember by its former name, Koko. Originally developed for Plasma Mobile and the desktop, it is designed to make viewing and organizing images comfortable and intuitive. The app has recently received noticeable updates: settings now feature a clearer structure, the album view has been visually refreshed, and a new dialog reliably warns before unsaved changes are lost. Improvements to fullscreen and slideshow modes make browsing images smoother and more streamlined.

Integrating seamlessly into the KDE photo tool ecosystem, Fotos complements both comprehensive programs like digiKam for professional management of large collections, and specialized applications such as KPhotoAlbum for systematic tagging or Showfoto for quick edits. For simpler, fast tasks, Gwenview serves as a classic viewer, and Fotos positions itself as a modern, lightweight alternative in between.

The app offers a clearly structured gallery view, letting you browse images sorted by folders or albums. Basic editing tools — crop, rotate, flip, and adjust brightness, contrast, and gamma — are included, and tagging or annotating images helps keep collections organized. Fullscreen and slideshow modes allow distraction-free enjoyment of your photos, and support for numerous formats makes it suitable for diverse collections.

Ideal for anyone seeking a straightforward daily image management solution, Fotos avoids complex tools and instead focuses on a fast, intuitive user experience without trying to replicate the functionality of larger programs. The app is not preinstalled in TUXEDO OS. Installation is easiest through the Discover software store by searching for Koko, or directly via the Install on Linux button on the app’s website.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: More Variety with Wallpapers

One of the first changes many users make on their system is setting a new desktop background. Some prefer a family photo, others a memory from their last vacation at the beach or in the mountains. With TUXEDO OS, this is effortless — and the possibilities offered by the KDE Plasma desktop go far beyond simply choosing a wallpaper.

To set your own wallpaper, right-click on an empty area of the desktop and select Workspace and Wallpaper. In the desktop settings, you can choose from numerous preinstalled images or add your own via Add. Using Get New…, additional wallpapers can also be downloaded directly from the internet.

For more variety without manually changing it every time, choose the Wallpaper Type option Image of the Day in the same dialog. This feature automatically downloads a new wallpaper each day from sources such as Wikimedia Commons, Bing, Flickr, or NASA with impressive astronomy images — even though some providers like NOAA or USRA unfortunately do not work at the moment. Currently, there is no option to filter by specific categories, such as only nature or vector images.

The wallpaper system is also highly expandable. Using Get New Modules (right next to the Wallpaper Type selection), you can install additional features. One particularly interesting module is Active Blur. After installing it and selecting it as the wallpaper type, the system applies a gentle blur to your background, which disappears when all windows on the current desktop are closed. This reduces distractions while working and gives a modern, pleasant effect.
