This Week in TUXEDO OS #50-2025

2025-12-12 18:01:15

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

Carrying owls to Athens – that’s exactly how it feels when we talk about Linux here. And yet, the latest numbers keep surprising us: In a survey initiated by the PCGH editorial team with around 1,500 participants, over 75 percent said they already use Linux alongside Windows, have fully switched, or plan to give the free operating system a try soon. Only a quarter rely exclusively on Windows.

The trend is clear internationally as well: In the USA, Linux has now exceeded the five-percent mark on desktop systems for the first time. Especially in the gaming sector, the momentum around SteamOS, the Steam Deck, and optimized gaming distributions like CachyOS, Nobara, PikaOS, or Bazzite is giving Linux an extra boost. Everything points to 2026 being another year of significant progress for Linux. The signs are clear: 2026 will be the year of the Linux desktop. Definitely. This time for sure! /s

No matter how Linux users decide – we say: welcome to the light side of the Force! We’re happy to see anyone discovering the freedom, flexibility, and transparency of Linux for themselves. In this week’s TWIX, we track down disk space hogs with Filelight and keep an eye on our investments directly from the KDE desktop with the Stock Market Widget.

KDE App of the Week: Visualize hard disk usage with Filelight

In this week’s KDE App of the Week, we introduce a graphical application for visualizing disk usage. Filelight scans local and remote disks or removable media. It displays disk usage as colored ring segments in a circular chart, helping you analyze and clean up storage in a clear and intuitive way. It integrates seamlessly into the context menus of file managers such as Dolphin, Konqueror, and Krusader.

Availability

Filelight is not preinstalled in TUXEDO OS, but it can be installed within seconds as a native package or as a Flatpak from the Discover software shop or via the terminal.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install filelight

Usage

On the first and subsequent launches, Filelight takes you to an overview where you choose whether you want to scan the Home Folder, the Root Folder, or Other Folders.

Before each scan, you can decide whether to map the entire file system or just a specific part, allowing you to analyze and clean up storage space efficiently.
Before each scan, you can decide whether to map the entire file system or just a specific part, allowing you to analyze and clean up storage space efficiently.

Before using it for the first time, it’s worth opening the hamburger menu with the three dots in the top right. Under Configure, you can define which directories should generally be excluded. A checkbox excludes network filesystems.

Another checkbox, Scan across filesystem boundaries, allows the tool to scan directories located on different filesystems instead of restricting the scan to the active filesystem. Without this setting, Filelight typically stops at mount points such as /mnt or /media to avoid unnecessary network traffic for remote filesystems like NFS or Samba.

For multi-partition set-ups such as when you use a separate /home, Btrfs subvolumes, or when scanning the Root Folder (/), this option must be enabled to allow complete analysis.

Under the Appearance tab, you can adjust the color scheme, increase contrast, and choose whether small files should also be displayed.

The list of folders to exclude from scanning can be customized, so certain directories are ignored and network or system folders are not unnecessarily loaded.

Filelight works quickly, typically scanning 100 GByte in two to three seconds. Hovering over any element of the visualization shows which file or directory it represents and how large it is. The context menu offers different options depending on the item type. For directories, you can open them, delete them, or exclude them from future scans. Files can only be opened or deleted.

The scan shows the scanned directories on the left and the graphical representation as colored ring segments on the right, giving you a clear overview of disk usage at a glance.

You can find a manual for Filelight in the hamburger menu. If you prefer to work on the system via the command line, the small command-line tool gdu, which we looked at in TWIX 46–2025, comes recommended.

Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Track Stock Performance Right on Your KDE Desktop

Schaffe, schaffe, Häusle baue – roughly translated as Work, work, build a little house – this old saying shaped the German approach to saving for decades. Real estate and savings accounts were seen as safe choices, while stocks and investment funds were often avoided. Even today, many remain skeptical of financial markets, and according to a recent study, the number of shareholders in Germany is actually declining. If you enjoy investing and want to keep an eye on important assets, the Stock Market Monitor for KDE Plasma 6 offers a practical way to do so directly from your desktop.

Quick Installation via the KDE Store

The widget, only a few days old, can be installed through the KDE Store. Right-click your desktop to Enter Edit Mode, open the widget manager with Add or Manage Widgets…, and select Get New… » Download New Plasma Widgets… to access the download overview. Search for “stock monitor” and install the widget. It will then appear in your widget list and can be placed on the desktop via drag-and-drop. You can access the configuration through a right-click and Configure Stock Monitor….

With the Stock Market Monitor for KDE Plasma 6, you can keep track of stock performance at any time and see changes directly on your desktop without opening a separate application.

Monitoring Individual Stocks and Funds

To track a stock, simply enter its Yahoo Finance ticker symbol, such as NVDA for Nvidia or MSFT for Microsoft. Funds use more complex identifiers, for example the MSCI WORLD index via ^990100-USD-STRD. A small bug currently prevents the correct currency display for funds, but the developer is already aware. Using the Date Range option, you can display timeframes ranging from a single day to several years.

The widget retrieves its data from Yahoo Finance and provides current values, including charts and percentage changes for the selected period.

Reduce Network Traffic and Respect Market Hours

To reduce data usage, you can define trading hours via Active Hours, restricting when the widget fetches new information. Since stock prices do not change outside market hours, updates during those times are unnecessary. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum are an exception, as they trade around the clock. On weekends, the widget automatically stops fetching new data to minimize requests.

Track Multiple Stocks at Once

To monitor several assets at the same time, enable the Show Multi-Stock-List display mode in the settings. Enter multiple ticker symbols separated by commas. The widget then presents a compact list of all selected values along with their current changes—ideal for portfolios or watchlists. Chart views are not available in this mode, but you can quickly identify trends at a glance: losses are shown in red, while gains appear in green.

The Multi-Stock-List provides a compact overview of multiple assets at once and displays price changes in a structured, easy-to-read layout.

Taxes and customs outside the EU:

For orders outside the EU there might be additional duties, taxes or charges needed to be paid by the customer. These don't have to be paid to the supplier, but to local authorities. Please check for any details with your local customs or tax authorities before ordering! But as a benefit you don't have to pay German taxes, this means you save up to 19%!
Due to the Brexit and the associated changes, there may be delays of several days in customs clearance on site for deliveries to the UK. This is not within our sphere of influence.

The processing of orders outside the EU may currently be subject to significant delays due to the respective customs authorities. Unfortunately, we have no influence over this and therefore ask you to check your shipment tracking daily. If the status of your shipment does not change for more than a week, please contact our customer service.

Thank you for your understanding!
