What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine is an operating system installed inside an operating system.
That means you're using your familiar e.g. Linux environment and are able to run right from there a Windows system with the software VirtualBox. The Windows system will behave as it was installed on a separate computer.

One of the advantages is that viruses and trojan horses can't jump from one system to another.
Optionally you can share specific folders as "shared drive" an move data between the virtual machine and your real operating system. Furthermore you have the option to use "copy" (CTRL + C) and "paste" (CTRL + V) between both systems.

At the virtual machine's system management - which is at the VirtualBox software's settings - you can determine how much ressources of your computer/laptop may be used by the virtual machine. You can set how much MiB of working memory and how many processor cores should be available for the virtual machine.

So if you would like to move completely to Linux but need to use one or another Windows software like Adobe Photoshop you can allocate 3/4 of your system's ressources for the virtual machine to make it really fast.
