TUXEDO OS Debian Open Beta: Updated ISO with UKI Support

An updated ISO image is now available for download for the TUXEDO OS Debian Open Beta. The new version brings several technical improvements. These include the default use of a Unified Kernel Image for encrypted installations, the switch to iwd, as well as updates to packages, the kernel, and the installer.

Encryption now uses UKI

For installations with full-disk encryption (FDE, Full Disk Encryption) enabled, the installer now automatically creates a Unified Kernel Image (UKI). The UKI combines the kernel, initramfs, and other components required for system startup and is configured as the default boot entry.

The LUKS password is entered through a Plymouth prompt with a localized keyboard layout. This means users no longer need to take into account that a US layout may be active during startup. The passphrase can therefore be entered using the expected keyboard layout.

In addition, the installer creates an alternative GRUB entry as a fallback. This also uses a localized keyboard layout for entering the LUKS password. If booting through the new UKI entry does not work for any reason, an alternative boot path therefore remains available.

iwd replaces wpa_supplicant

For wireless connections, the new ISO now uses iwd instead of wpa_supplicant. iwd is a lightweight wireless daemon developed and actively maintained by Intel. The switch is intended to reduce the long-term maintenance effort compared to the previous wpa_supplicant stack.

For existing installations, iwd is deliberately not introduced for now. The switch would require all previously configured wireless connections to be deleted and then set up again. This avoids unnecessarily modifying existing installations or affecting already configured network access.

Package base: The package base of the new ISO corresponds to the state of Debian Testing from September 7, 2026. In addition, the included Linux kernel has been updated to version 7.1.13. The installation medium is therefore based on the current development state of the Debian Testing packages and brings these changes directly to new installations.

Calamares has been improved

The Calamares installer also receives several adjustments with the new ISO. The branding has been updated and brought in line with the current state of the TUXEDO OS Debian Open Beta. This makes the installation process visually more consistent with the current version of the operating system.

In addition, a bug in Calamares has been fixed that reliably caused the installer to crash when opening the Users module. User management during installation can therefore once again be opened and used without encountering this known issue.

Secure Boot: The new ISO can technically already be booted with Secure Boot enabled. Production-ready support is not yet available, however, as a suitably signed kernel is still missing for booting. The required signing and integration are the next steps in the development of this feature.

Changes for existing systems

Existing installations also receive updates for tuxedo-base-files and tuxedo-btrfs. When full-disk encryption is enabled, the UKI and GRUB configuration is adjusted accordingly to match the new installation routine. This means that already installed systems also benefit from the improvements to the boot process.

The switch from wpa_supplicant to iwd is not yet included in existing installations. The reason is that all configured wireless connections would need to be set up again. The change therefore remains limited to new installations for the time being and will be considered further at a later stage.

Feedback is welcome

The TUXEDO OS Debian Open Beta is still under development. Feedback, bug reports, and notes from practical use are therefore explicitly welcome. Bugs and suggestions for improvements can be submitted directly through the GitLab project of the TUXEDO OS Debian Open Beta.

The updated ISO is available for download on the TUXEDO OS Preview page. The page also provides the current installation media for the Debian Open Beta. Anyone who wants to test the development can use the new ISO directly for a fresh installation and then share feedback through the Open Beta project.

Due to the Brexit and the associated changes, there may be delays of several days in customs clearance on site for deliveries to the UK. This is not within our sphere of influence.
