Beta test for our new plasma package sources

We aim to align more closely with how Debian packages KDE in the future. One of the reasons for this is compatibility issues that occurred especially during the upgrade from Ubuntu 22.04 „Jammy Jellyfish“ to Ubuntu 24.04 „Noble Numbat.“ To address this, we have backported Qt, KDE Plasma, KDE Frameworks, and KDE Gear from the current Ubuntu point release to Ubuntu 24.04.

Beta Test

Our internal testing of this transition has been ongoing for some time. However, to ensure the smoothest possible migration to the new package sources, we would like to broaden the testing base and are therefore launch a public beta test, where we would greatly appreciate your help. You can participate in the beta test until the end of June.

You can use either an installed ISO image or a WebFAI installation on real hardware or in a virtual machine. With just a few steps, you can switch an existing TUXEDO OS installation to the new sources using our script. Before concluding the beta test, we cannot guarantee that the current beta test version will be suitable for production use. It is therefore possible that the system could be left in a state from which it cannot be updated to the final release. For this reason, we recommend not running the test on a production device.

Deployment

To participate in the beta test, download the upgrader from our Smaland repository and install it by double-clicking the file in your Downloads folder or install via the command line with:

sudo apt install ~/Downloads/upgrader_0.2-2tux1_amd64.deb

Migration

Start the actual migration with the command:

sudo upgrade.sh

The script includes several pause points, indicated by the word Enter on the last line. This gives you the opportunity to see what the script will do next. To proceed, press the ENTER key each time. The process takes at least 15 minutes, depending on your internet connection speed. The final step is rebooting into the migrated system.

Final Test

Use the following command to check whether everything worked correctly:

dpkg -l | grep -iE "\+neon|release\+|vrelease"

If successful, the command should produce no output. You can now use the migrated system. Please report any issues during the migration or later while using the system here.
