Differences between TUXEDO OS, Kubuntu and KDE Neon

A good computer needs not only good hardware, but also good software. For this reason, we at TUXEDO Computers are not only constantly working on our devices, but are also developing our own Linux distribution with TUXEDO OS. In order to not have to reinvent the wheel, we use Ubuntu as a basis, but revise the distribution in a number of important places, which we would like to present to you in the following.

Nick from The Linux Experiment has explained the main differences in a video. In addition to this, we can go into a bit more detail: Compared to Ubuntu or its KDE variant Kubuntu, we use the cutting-edge KDE Plasma packages of the KDE Neon User-Edition. We don’t just mirror these, but subject them to extensive testing on a selection of devices and only release them when we are convinced of the quality of the packages.

As one of the Patrons of KDE, we firmly believe that users get the best possible Linux desktop with KDE Plasma. We therefore refrain from making major adjustments to the interface. Purely from the appearance of the desktop, an installation of TUXEDO OS therefore does not differ significantly from that of a freshly installed Kubuntus or KDE Neon. The biggest differences are found under the hood of the KDE desktop, in the depths of the system.

We integrate a number of current drivers, libraries and applications directly from source into our package sources. The focus here is on providing the best possible support for our devices. The following list enumerates all packages maintained by TUXEDO developers (as of September 2023). This list is not set in stone. New packages can be added or some can be removed if own packages should not be necessary anymore.
