Dual boot or Windows in the VM - Which is right for you? - TUXEDO Computers

As you probably know, we deliver our devices with a customized Linux system. On request, we also install Windows 11 either as a dual-boot option or as a virtual machine. Our customers sometimes ask us in this context, “Should I order my TUXEDO notebook or PC with dual-boot Linux and Windows, or is Linux as the fixed installation with a Windows virtual machine (VM) sufficient?” Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. Here we give you an overview so you can make the right decision for your use case.

Dual-Boot – two systems, full performance

With dual-boot, Linux and Windows are installed in parallel on the same hardware but in different partitions. When starting the computer, you decide which system will boot.

Advantages

• Windows and Linux each run at maximum performance since they run directly on the hardware.
• Perfect for gaming, CAD, video editing, and other computing- or graphics-intensive software.
• Clean separation: Both systems remain independent from each other.

Disadvantages:

• A dual-boot system requires a restart to switch between the two operating systems. This costs time and can be inconvenient if frequent switching is needed.
• Partitioning and maintaining both operating systems requires more effort, such as during installation, updates, and potential bootloader issues in the event of Windows updates that may affect it.
• There is a risk of accidentally damaging the bootability of one system or having the Linux bootloader overwritten by Windows updates.

Windows in the VM – parallel and flexible

A virtual machine (VM) is software that installs a complete Windows system (or other systems) inside Linux. The VM uses host system resources such as CPU, memory, disk space, and network interfaces, which are provided by the host via a virtualization layer. Well-known applications for setting up VMs are VirtualBox, VMware, or Linux’s own KVM/QEMU. You are not limited to a single VM but can set up multiple VMs—only limited by the host’s resources—and even run them simultaneously if needed. Windows (or other operating systems and distributions) then run in parallel with Linux, either in a window or in full screen.

Advantages:

• Convenient for individual applications that only run under Windows, such as certain accounting or banking software.
• Snapshots allow you to save the VM state and roll it back if needed.
• Increased security: Windows runs in an isolated environment.

Disadvantages:

• Performance is slightly restricted: games and graphics-heavy software generally do not run as smoothly.
• Higher resource requirements: the VM needs additional RAM, CPU cores, and disk space.
• Some hardware, such as specific dongles or special modes of graphics cards, only works with limitations or not at all.

Which option is better for you?

• Dual-boot makes sense if you regularly use applications that require the full performance of your hardware.
• A VM is ideal if you only occasionally need Windows programs, but want them available alongside Linux in everyday use.
