How we test our devices before they go on sale

When the package carrier delivers your eagerly awaited TUXEDO, both the respective model and your personal device have already gone through a long test course to ensure that everything works as you expect it to.

This includes two distinguishable series of tests. The first is the testing that a new product undergoes before it even appears in our store and is available for you to order. The second series of tests concerns the device you have ordered, before it makes its way to you.

Tests that a new product goes through

Before a new product is released for sale, we put it through its paces. For this purpose, it has to pass a test course with more than 100 points. In the process, every component of the device is checked for correct functionality in all possible functions.

First test sample

The chassis for TUXEDO devices are known to come from Asian suppliers. If a new CPU generation from Intel or AMD is introduced, we select the desired components from the manufacturers and order accordingly equipped evaluation samples. Special requests can be taken into account within the limits of serial production. If these are satisfactory, test devices for the test series follow up.

Test course

These samples end up with our test team, who work with them extensively for weeks and test all installed components for satisfactory functionality. The test devices are initially always assembled to the same level for comparability. For notebooks, this includes an Intel AX200 WLAN/Bluetooth module, two RAM strips and current firmware and BIOS versions. On the software side, all new devices are first installed with Windows including all drivers in a dual-boot process and then with TUXEDO OS via WebFAI. This setup is then used for the functional tests.

One of the most comprehensive of a total of 104 test categories checks the display and the interaction with the integrated and, if available, a discrete GPU. After the frame rates, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C and, depending on the model, Thunderbolt are checked in terms of graphics output at 4k@60Hz. In the next step, switching between the integrated GPU and a discrete graphics unit is checked if one is present. In addition, we measure how high the power consumption is with and without the discrete GPU switched on. The graphical performance is then checked under TUXEDO OS and Windows with various benchmarks from the Phoronix Test Suite. All other components undergo similarly in-depth tests.

Tests that your ordered TUXEDO goes through

In addition, every device you order from us goes through further individual tests. After your device has been assembled according to your order, it goes to the test center. There the appropriate BIOS and EC are flashed, and the ordered operating systems are installed. At this point, CPU and graphic card have to pass several burn-in tests. If these tests are passed, it’s time for individualization. In this process, your individual wishes for logo printing and keyboard laser engraving are implemented. Afterward, your device is carefully packed and handed over to the delivery service.

Logistical tasks

However, the extensive testing of hardware and software is only part of the process of introducing a new device. There are also many logistical and organizational tasks, such as creating the marketing concept, including articles and photos, and integrating it into the ordering system. Press partners and device testers want to be informed at an early stage so that they can include the new product in their planning. Finally, a suitable name has to be found for the newcomer before we offer the new addition to our repertoire in the store and announce it in our newsletter.
