Resetting CMOS RAM

The term CMOS RAM refers to a special memory area where the BIOS parameters are stored. It is supplied with power via its own small battery. This battery buffering is necessary because otherwise system-related configurations and information would be lost or reset to the default settings as soon as the computer is switched off and disconnected from the power supply. In certain cases it is helpful to reset the CMOS RAM.

Note: A CMOS reset can have far-reaching consequences. Please only perform it on the instructions of a TUXEDO employee.

Overview

Remove CMOS battery

This section applies to all TUXEDO devices, as in this case the CMOS battery is unplugged. This is necessary if your TUXEDO computer does not have an Insyde or Aptio BIOS that supports a soft CMOS reset. Proceed as follows:

  • Unplug the power supply from the device.
  • Open the bottom of the device (see instructions).
  • Only on InfinityBook v1/v2/v3 (from 2015/2016): Remove the RAM module(s) (see instructions).
  • Remove the BIOS battery (button cell). Or, if the battery is wrapped in foil: remove the connector (see instructions).
  • Bridge the contacts in the battery socket/connector socket (for example with a paper clip or screwdriver).
  • While doing so, press and hold the power button for about five seconds (while bridging the contacts).
  • Reinsert the BIOS battery (and RAM modules, if applicable) and close the lid. The power supply can now be reconnected.

In most cases the device will start by itself as soon as the power supply is plugged in, otherwise switch on your TUXEDO computer manually. A message about the reset BIOS should appear.

Soft-CMOS-Reset: Devices with BIOS from Insyde

These devices include for example these TUXEDO computers:

  • TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 13, 14 and 15 (v4 and v5)
  • TUXEDO Book BC1510
  • TUXEDO Book BX1510

Press the hotkey for Insyde BIOS FN+D plus the power button during a cold boot. Make sure to press the three keys simultaneously. Proceed as follows for this:

  • Switch off the device completely, if necessary by pressing and holding the device’s on/off switch for about five seconds.
  • Press and hold the key combination [FN]+[D] with the left hand.
  • Press and hold the on/off button with your right hand.
  • Press and hold all three buttons. It may take up to 15 seconds for the process to be completed.

Depending on the system, it may happen that the laptop shuts down automatically after a successful reset. Should this happen, or should you see the TUXEDO boot logo or a BIOS message on the screen, you can release the key combination. If the laptop should have switched itself off during the process, you can now switch it on again normally via the power button.

Soft-CMOS-Reset: Devices with BIOS from Aptio

These devices include, for example, these TUXEDO computers:

  • TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 14 ab Gen6
  • TUXEDO Stellaris 13/17 ab Gen3
  • TUXEDO Polaris 15/17 ab Gen3

Hotkey for Aptio BIOS: CTRL+B during a cold boot. This key combination does not have to be held down together with the power button. However, you have to hold the key combination for a relatively long time. Please proceed as follows:

  • Switch off the device completely, if necessary by pressing and holding the power button for about five seconds.
  • Hold down the key combination CTRL+B and press the power button to switch on the system.
  • Continue to hold down CTRL+B. It may take up to two minutes for the process to complete.
  • The power LED will flash briefly as soon as the reset is performed. From this point on, you can release CTRL+B. You do not have to keep the On/Off button pressed continuously.

It will now take about 20 to 25 seconds until the laptop boots with reset settings. You can then go into the BIOS setup with F2 and check your settings.
