Setting up TUXEDO Thunderbolt docking station

The TUXEDO Thunderbolt docking station is of course ready to go with Linux. Plug the docking station into the Thunderbolt USB Type-C port of your TUXEDO book. It doesn’t matter whether the notebook is already running or not. The following two steps will help you to set up your notebook:

Enabling DisplayPort over Thunderbolt in BIOS

Make sure that your TUXEDO Book is designed for operation with Thunderbolt and that you use Thunderbolt 3. All devices with Thunderbolt 4 lack this option in the BIOS, since Intel has decided that everything runs via the operating system starting with Thunderbolt 4.

  1. On boot, press and hold the F2 key to switch to BIOS and select Setup Utility.
  2. Use cursor keys or touchpad to navigate to Advanced Chipset Control via Advanced
  3. Here please switch from DDI to mDP to DDI to TBT at DDI Control if not already done.
  4. Save and exit the BIOS with F10.

Easy setup and authorization

  1. Call up the device management of your system: Tux key > Settings > Devices > Thunderbolt

  2. Authorize the docking station to access your system:

Authorization via the BIOS

The following method is only intended as an option if your distribution does not support authentication, and is also only valid for Thunderbolt 3. All devices with Thunderbolt 4 also lack this option in the BIOS, since Intel has decided that everything runs via the operating system starting with Thunderbolt 4.

However, since this also disables a potential protection mechanism, we only recommend this path to a limited extent. In case of doubt, please use a supported distribution like TUXEDO*OS or Ubuntu 18.04. For openSUSE Leap 15 an implementation is already in progress!

  1. Start your notebook and press F2 immediately and repeatedly until the boot menu appears.
  2. Select Setup Utility (bottom row, middle)
  3. Under Advanced, select the point Thunderbolt Configuration.
  4. Change the Security Level from User Authorization to No Security.
  5. Press the F10 key to save and exit the BIOS. Your notebook restarts now and you can use Thunderbolt devices directly from now on.
