Upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and TUXEDO OS

With the release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS "Jammy Jellyfish" on April 21, 2022, TUXEDO OS is switching from Ubuntu Budgie to Ubuntu with KDE Plasma Desktop. This article describes how to upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04, from Ubuntu Budgie to Ubuntu with Plasma Desktop and how to keep Ubuntu Budgie up to date, if that is what you prefer.

1. Upgrade from TUXEDO OS with Budgie to the new TUXEDO OS with Plasma Desktop

Upgrading to the new TUXEDO OS with Plasma Desktop is a breeze thanks to our WebFAI. First, please ensure that you back up all the data you still need beforehand because WebFAI deletes all existing data. Please also remove any unneeded external drives. Then you can use WebFAI according to our instructions to switch to the new TUXEDO OS with KDE Plasma Desktop. To achieve this, select the top distribution in the list of distributions offered: TUXEDO_OS 22.04 LTS or TUXEDO_OS 22.04 LTS crypt, in case you want an encrypted system.

2. Upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04.x LTS to Ubuntu 22.04

If you want to update a stock Ubuntu 20.04.x to 22.04, the first thing you need to do is to make sure that the system is updated to current 20.04. You can do this either through the Ubuntu Software graphical package app or through the command line. But first of all, go to Software & Updates, and under the tab Updates, set the drop-down menu under Notify me of new versions to For any new version.

If you wish to use the graphical way and the system does not offer you updates by itself after booting up, open the software symbolized by the icon of an orange suitcase in the sidebar and click on Updates in the upper-right corner. The number of packages to update depends on which sub-version of Ubuntu 20.04 you are running. If you are already at 20.04.4, it will only be a few packages that you need to install. After all is done, you should see this picture:

Since updating via Ubuntu Software doesn't always detect all packages that offer an update, it makes sense to do the process on the command line in the first place. In any case, after the obligatory reboot, you should check if everything is up-to-date:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

Additionally, you should remove all unneeded packages:

sudo apt autoremove

Now, as with any system upgrade, make sure you have a backup of your important data. If it is an Ubuntu with GNOME desktop, next disable all GNOME extensions, as many of them will no longer be compatible after the upgrade and need to be updated separately.

Then, if not installed already, get the package update-manager-core

sudo apt install update-manager-core

When that finishes, run the Ubuntu upgrade utility:

sudo do-release-upgrade

After you confirm with y at the bottom, the download and installation of the new packages will begin. Some packages may also be removed in the process, and that is normal.

However, you can also view the details by selecting option d before proceeding. You may be prompted about changes to configuration files during the upgrade. At these points, press enter unless you know better.

Towards the end, you will need to confirm the removal of unneeded packages again separately. After the upgrade is complete, you can reboot into the new version. You can see that you were successful by the current background image with the "Jammy Jellyfish".

Use the same procedure to upgrade Ubuntu 21.10 and all official Ubuntu variants. If you wish to delay the upgrade, you will receive a notification about the official support for the upgrade to 22.04 after the release of Ubuntu 21.10 and all official Ubuntu variants. If you still want to wait with the upgrade, you will receive a notification about the official support for the upgrade to 22.04 after the release of Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS and will be guided through the process.

3. Continue to receive updates for TUXEDO OS with Budgie

If you wish to stay with the previous TUXEDO OS with Budgie as desktop, nothing stands in your way. You will continue to receive updates until the official end of support for Ubuntu 20.04 in 2025. If you want to freshly install or reinstall TUXEDO OS with Budgie, this can be done easily via WebFAI. The only thing that changes here is that TUXEDO OS with Budgie slides further down in the overview list and passes the recommendation badge to the new TUXEDO OS with Plasma Desktop.
