Installing other desktops like KDE Plasma or Gnome

TUXEDO Computers offers only TUXEDO OS and Ubuntu pre-installed. If other graphical user interfaces are required, this can be done very easily by yourself. Under Ubuntu, every desktop environment has a so-called "metapackage" that allows you to install everything you need. For the individual desktops the metapackages are called:

  • KDE Plasma: kubuntu-desktop
  • Xfce: xubuntu-desktop
  • MATÉ: ubuntu-mate-desktop
  • Budgie: ubuntu-budgie-desktop (starting with 17.10!)
  • LXDE: lubuntu-desktop
  • Gnome: ubuntu-desktop (until 16.04 with Unity!)

Graphical installation via Synaptic

1. Click your "Tux button", click System and click Synaptic Pact Management. Launch Synaptic.
2. Press the search function and enter the name of the metapackage in the search field.

3. Right-click on the package and select "Flag for installation" and click "Flag" again in the next window.

4. After the box is checked, click on "Apply" at the top and in the next window on "Apply".

Ready!

If you prefer to install packages via the terminal

1. open a terminal window with Ctrl+Alt+T or press the  "Tux"-key → System and open Tilix
2. Second, write:
sudo apt install [your desired desktop, see above]-desktop
3. Enter your password and press Enter - the installation starts.

After completion, it is sufficient to log out and select the corresponding session on the logon screen.
