"Do what you want"
but with a TUXEDO!

Makerspace Gütersloh receives two TUXEDOs as a donation

Augsburg (Germany), July 7th, 2022. Makerspace Gütersloh received replacements from TUXEDO Computers for its aging existing computers: an XP1508 and an InsanityBook 15 now serve as workstations and mobile devices.

"The two notebooks are from our stock and no longer in our range on the website and online store but to date they have never been used. Thus, the Makerspace gets completely new equipment," explains Herbert Feiler, Managing Director of TUXEDO Computers.

TUXEDOs for constructions and much more

Currently, one of the devices is being used in a room at the Makerspace Gütersloh, which is being converted into a home theater.

Here, the notebook is used for media playback and research work as well as for writing various articles. The connection to the speakers and the projector is easily made via jack cable, Chromecast or HDMI - depending on whether audio, video or both are needed.

In the actual workshop, the two notebooks are to be equipped and operated with various programs, which are mainly necessary for the use of CAM applications for laser cutter, 3D printer, milling machine, plotter and embroidery machine.

"Now that more and longer meetings are being established in the Makerspace again, I can well imagine that construction, modeling or image editing will also take place on the computers. We also want to create more workshop videos now to make instructions on the machines as easy as possible. To do this, we use the notebooks to record, edit and render audio and video. Our software programs that we use in the makerspace are LightBurn, PrusaSlicer, FreeCAD, Ink/Stitch, OpenSCAD, Blender, Inkscape, VSCode, OBS, Audacity and Shotcut. We are very happy to have received this donation from TUXEDO Computers," confirms Michael Prange, board member Makerspace Gütersloh.

Currently, the devices are still running the well-known TUXEDO OS, but the makerspace would like to test other distributions like Fedora and gradually switch them on a regular basis.

About the Makerspace Gütersloh

The Makerspace Gütersloh operates an open workshop where machines and tools are used and explored together. Under the motto "Do what you want!", members and interested people are encouraged to be creative themselves and create new things. Those involved have different skills and support each other in projects that they would not be able to implement on their own. Non-members are also allowed to use the facility. The association sees itself as a sharing community to give a large number of people access to machines, digital equipment and shared knowledge. Everyone is welcome, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, social background, disability or sexual orientation. However, there is no commissioned work, projects must be done by the participants themselves as far as possible.

Since the end of 2017, the equipment has been constantly expanding. Currently, there are different workspaces for 3D printing, electronics, wood, textile, audio/video and digital. The Makerspace is particularly proud of their laser cutter, the self-built CNC milling machine, the embroidery machine, the screen printing set and the wood workshop in general. In addition to the workshop, there is another area with a sofa and projector to give lectures or have meetings in a comfortable space. The members are committed to a healthy environment and set a visible sign against the throwaway society and the mindful consumption of electrical items with the monthly Repair Café.
