AR Sandbox for geography teaching has Linux-PC as basis

Augsburg (Germany), 2nd of March 2020. The Paul-Klee-Gymnasium in Gersthofen near Augsburg (Germany) now has a fully functional Linux PC that serves as the basis for an augmented reality sandbox for geography lessons.

In the current school year, the school would like to set up a MakerSpace for students interested in technology to give them access to 3D printers, single-board computers, flying drones and other technical facilities. The construction of an Augmented Reality sandbox is also planned, for which TUXEDO Computers provides a TUXEDO Cube in aluminium casing with high-quality equipment free of charge: The computer contains an i7-6700 processor, an NVIDIA GTX1060 as well as 8 GB RAM and a hard disk with 250 GB. For the software Linux Mint with a mate desktop in the 64-bit version was installed. This distribution is not part of TUXEDO Computers' standard selection, but a pre-installation was made to ease the user's workload. "We already had all parts together, only the powerful PC unfortunately exceeded the modest financial scope of our MakerSpace", confirmed Martin Korn, teacher at the Gymnasium in Gersthofen (Germany).

"We were happy to help out here. And: With this equipment, the computer is not only equipped for the sandbox project - it can also be used for other projects or services, because we have used much higher quality components than was required by the minimum requirements for the project," explains Herbert Feiler, CEO of TUXEDO Computers.

The Augmented Reality Sandbox will then make topographic maps including contour lines comprehensible in geography lessons in the 5th grade - a camera hanging above the sandbox displays the contour lines and layers and changes them dynamically as soon as you change the sand with your hands. Likewise, the consequences of erosion can be experienced and countermeasures can be tried out or the runoff behaviour of precipitation can be examined more closely.

Herbert Feiler is delighted: "We are happy to support companies and schools in the local area and think it's great that government institutions are also increasingly keen to distinguish themselves with high-quality equipment and devices in order to make a good impression on students. Especially as we find the possibility of combining several subjects, such as computer science, geography and technology in this case, very exciting".
