Which Linux operating system is right for me?

With a huge selection of Linux distributions you are often spoilt for choice

Verschiedene Linux-Betriebssysteme zur Auswahl

There are innumerable Linux distributions and those who would like to change as a user have a very wide range to choose from. Here you should pay attention to a few things and not take "any system". For example, if you want to switch freshly to Linux, you should stay away from so-called Linux exotics. The long-lasting duration of such distributions can usually not be guaranteed and not infrequently a praised system has disappeared after two years again in the sinking.

By the way: The Distrowatch website presents general information, news and a popularity ranking for various Linux distributions.

A selection of popular systems - first live system, then installation

Here we present - without evaluation and order - a small selection of systems, which on the one hand are well known and on the other hand already have a certain number of years and updates. Ultimately, however, the user must find out for himself what is important to him and what system he could cope with. Before you start installing wildly, however, it is advisable to test the live systems of some distributions beforehand. This way you can get a first impression without having to overwrite the current operating system on your PC or laptop.

A selection of popular Linux distributions that we have researched online and in specialist magazines:

Linux-Betriebssystem Ubuntu

Ubuntu

Anyone who has ever had anything to do with a PC and computers and has been informed about operating systems knows Ubuntu. Many users, currently about 25 million, are using the system. Ubuntu is often used as a synonym for Linux - which of course is not true, but it explains the popularity of the distribution. The system is often used because it is user-friendly, supports multi-media well and (mostly) runs quite stable. At this point at the latest, however, opinions differ widely.

The current long-term version, Ubuntu Budgie 18.04, can be ordered pre-installed on all TUXEDO Computers devices. TUXEDO Computers also offers the so-called TUXEDO_OS - based on Ubuntu with Budgie Desktop. "We plan to make in the long term also our own Linux distribution available , explain CEO Herbert Feiler. Of course, customers and interested parties will be informed promptly.

Linux-Betriebssystem elementary

elementary OS

This Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu and reminds, not only because of its name, very much of MacOS. elementary OS is a relatively slim system with a chic look. It is suitable both for fixed installation on a PC and as a portable system. The goal of elemantary OS is to provide standard programs that are easy to use and you don't have to use the terminal as often. However, one often reads on the net that the system is only conditionally suitable for beginners. Probably personal preferences also play a role here, and whether you already have experience with some programs that don't exist under elementary OS and need to be installed if you want them.

Linux-Betriebssystem Linux Mint

Linux Mint

This operating system is specially designed for PCs and is based on Ubuntu. The system is considered very chic by its users. Two years ago it was said that Mint was even more common on desktop computers than Ubuntu. In addition to open source free software, Mint should also apply to proprietary, non-free, but popular software such as Adobe Flash. In addition, Linux Mint would be particularly beginner-friendly. The system relies above all on the use of specially developed desktop environments, such as Cinnamon.

Linux-Betriebssystem Fedora

Fedora

This is a Red Hat distribution and a community-based variant. It is very advanced and uses Gnome as its default user interface. Fedora was developed for general use on server and desktop systems. There are also daily security updates and always the latest software. It is said that Fedora is also suitable for beginners. But also here there are different opinions. On the net it is said that you have to install Fedora manually in order to get the functionality you expect from a modern desktop. Here, too, personal preferences play an important role.

Linux-Betriebssystem openSUSE

openSUSE

In Germany, openSUSE is probably still one of the best-known Linux distributions. The special feature is the extensive configuration tool YAST (Yet Another Setup Tool) and the user interface KDE. However, Gnome can also be installed. The focus of the distribution is to be a stable and user-friendly operating system for workstations and servers. Also openSUSE is available to customers and prospective customers with the purchase of a TUXEDO Computers device pre-installed, if they wish it.

Linux-Betriebssystem Debian

Debian

It is one of the oldest, most influential and most widely distributed Linux distributions. Ubuntu is based on Debian and many other distributions use Debian as their base. The system is still the first choice for a professional server system. It is also known for its package management dpkg and frontend APT. This makes it possible to replace old versions of Debian with current ones or install new software packages and resolve all dependencies required by a program.

Linux-Betriebssystem MX Linux

MX Linux

Based on Debian and antiX, this system is also suitable for older PCs, because the hardware requirements of the system are not high. According to the manufacturer it is elegant, efficient with easy configuration, high stability and solid performance. MX Linux is above all a lightweight distribution and has an integrated manual that is very detailed.

Linux-Betriebssystem Solus

Solus

Solus is also based on Debian and started as a replica of Google Chrome OS. It uses as desktop interface the self developed "Budgie", which reminds of Gnome2. The system prides itself on having been designed for everyone. But there is one limitation: It is only available for 64-bit PCs and laptops but supports touchscreens. But the distribution offers a wide range of functions and is easy to use. Solus not only offers innovative ideas, but also optically relies on flat design.

Linux-Betriebssystem Archlinux

Arch

For simplicity's sake, this Linux operating system does without graphical installation and configuration aids. Therefore Arch Linux is to be seen as a distribution for advanced users. It does not plan its versions on certain dates, but works with a rolling release system. With the rolling release, the system is continuously updated and no longer needs to be replaced by a new version. Arch's goal is to provide a simple, customizable Linux with many freedoms.

Linux-Betriebsystem manjaro

Manjaro

Manjaro Linux was developed in Germany, France and Austria and is also based on ArchLinux. Manjaro Linux is fast, user-friendly, and desktop-oriented. Once Manjaro is installed, you also benefit from the rolling release. It is first and foremost a system for PCs, which is designed for user-friendliness. It is aimed at beginners and advanced users. An interesting feature for advanced users is the package manager: Here you can select a tab called "AUR" - the "Arch User Repositories" under "Settings" and expand the number of programs so that you also have access to the latest versions.

This list ends here, but actually there are many more Linux distributions like KDE neon, Knoppix, CentOS, Gentoo, Bhodi Linux, True OS or Mageia as well as Parrot OS and so on.

For every taste something here

So the choice of Linux distributions is enormous and should have something to offer for every taste and skill. You can also find out if you want a lightweight operating system, the classics or a custom version. There are also Linux versions for special tasks such as video editing, music production or graphic design. The research is extensive, but it's worth the effort to get a Linux system that you can work with very well.

Distrochooser

Since the selection is huge, you can also make the search easier and resort to tools such as Distrochooser. The webservice provides a test that helps you to orientate yourself in the world of Linux distributions. The user answers questions or skips them and can weight properties accordingly at the end and receives a distribution recommendation at the end.
