New ISO-Image for TUXEDO OS

We have made a fresh ISO image of TUXEDO OS available for you on 25 October. Of course, you do not have to reinstall but will also receive all the new features via a normal upgrade of your installation.

Kernel and KDE

In addition to the Linux 6.5 kernel, the Qt libraries Frameworks 5.111.0 and the KDE software collection Gear 23.08.2 have been made available. In the next few days, another bug-fix release of Plasma with the version number 5.27.9 will follow via upgrade. This is joined by Firefox in the latest release 119.0.

Firefox 119

In the new Firefox, the PDF editor can now also integrate images. Firefox View gets new functions and shows more content than before. This function, accessible via an icon in the top left of the tab bar, helps to reopen tabs recently closed on other devices on the current device and to access tabs from other devices. Some Chrome extensions are easier to adopt with Firefox 119.

Updated Kernel

Part of the new image of TUXEDO OS is Linux 6.5. We briefly explain what has changed since Linux 6.2, the kernel used lately in TUXEDO OS.

Linux 6.3

Linux 6.3 brings improved support for the programming language Rust and for the Steam Deck controller. Initial code for the Intel Meteor-Lake CPU series expected in 2024 has been integrated. The Network File System (NFS) learns new tricks in the field of cryptography and now allows AES-SHA2-based encryption on both the client and the server. In addition, the code was cleaned up all over the kernel.

Linux 6.4

With Linux 6.4, the Ext4 file system was optimised and allows better performance for tasks with many write operations. Btrfs was also accelerated when it comes to concurrent accesses to subvolumes. The WLAN protocol received updates; fewer details are transmitted if they are not important for the connection. In addition, mesh support for WLAN 7 has been activated. Linux 6.4 also supports the WLAN cards on the Apple devices M1 Pro and Max.

Linux 6.5

Linux 6.5 supports USB4 v2 and Midi v2 in Alsa. USB4 v2 allows transfer rates of up to 80 Gbps via USB C. Linux 6.5 also improves the journaling of the EXT4 file system and increases stability by avoiding memory leaks. The initially supported Rust version in the kernel has been updated from 1.62 to 1.68.2. The new kernel is also able to activate or reactivate CPUs in parallel.
