Road to Game Jam – TUXEDO goes Gaming - TUXEDO Computers

The „Road to Game Jam“ was born from the idea of hosting our own Game Jam at TUXEDO – sending a clear signal for gaming and game development on Linux. At a Game Jam, developers and gaming enthusiasts come together to create game prototypes within a tight timeframe, usually over a weekend.

At the end, the projects are presented and usually evaluated. Prizes are a nice incentive, but the focus is on creativity, teamwork, and the joy of developing together. Implement your own ideas, try prototypes from other teams, and learn from each other – that’s what a Game Jam is all about.

May 8–10: The TUXEDO Game Jam

What makes the TUXEDO Game Jam special? We exclusively use free and open-source software. Instead of proprietary tools like Unreal, Maya, or Photoshop, we rely on powerful open-source alternatives such as Godot, Blender, and Krita. Linux is clearly the target platform.

In recent years, Linux has increasingly established itself as a serious gaming platform. So why not develop games consistently on Linux and with free software? At the Game Jam, we want to test exactly that and discover together the strengths and challenges of a fully open development environment.

The Road to Game Jam

Not all participants already have experience with free alternatives to common development tools. That’s why we offer several preparatory workshops in advance. This provides a solid foundation for everyone who is new or wants to deepen their knowledge.

The focus is on the 3D software suite Blender and the game engines Godot and Bevy. Blender allows you to design characters, objects, and entire levels. Godot is one of the best-known free game engines, offering an easy entry point with high performance. Bevy, on the other hand, is aimed at developers with basic Rust knowledge.

Target Audience

No prior knowledge is required for the Blender and Godot workshops. Anyone comfortable with a laptop and interested in 3D animation or game development can participate. The Bevy workshop is aimed at participants with programming experience and fundamental knowledge of the Rust programming language.

To participate meaningfully in the Game Jam, participants should have experience in at least one area relevant to game development. This includes 3D asset creation, working with a game engine, programming, visual design, or musical expertise. Missing fundamentals can be acquired during the Road-to-Game-Jam workshops.

Teamwork is explicitly encouraged to foster creative exchange. Individual participation is of course possible, but teams often produce the most diverse and exciting projects.

Road to Game Jam 2026 Schedule

To ensure optimal preparation for the Game Jam, we start our workshop series in March:

March 13–15: Three-Day Blender Workshop

Do you want to dive into the world of 3D animation and create your own short film? This workshop is perfect for you! You will learn the basics of the powerful 3D animation suite Blender: program navigation, 3D modeling, animation, compositing, simulation, and more. After the introduction, you will work independently or in groups on a small animated short film to apply and reinforce your new knowledge.

April 17–19: Three-Day Godot Workshop

The Godot engine is both beginner-friendly and powerful. It is becoming increasingly popular among hobby developers and in professional game development. In this workshop, we will teach you the basics of the engine and develop a small game together. Participants from the Blender workshop can directly reuse the objects and scenes they previously created.

April 24–26: Three-Day Bevy Workshop

For developers with Rust experience, Bevy offers an exciting alternative to Godot. Here, the game is created entirely in code using the Rust programming language, without a visual editor. Get a sense of the engine’s capabilities with these demos. The workshop is led by the Rust User Group Augsburg, while TUXEDO provides the venue and suitable hardware. 2026 – An Important Year for Linux Gaming

Valve’s commitment to graphics drivers and Windows game compatibility has significantly advanced Linux gaming in recent years. The Steam Deck in particular has shown the potential of the Linux ecosystem and reached new audiences.

We are confident that 2026 can be another milestone for Linux gaming – thanks to new hardware generations and continuous improvements in the software stack. TUXEDO Computers aims to actively contribute to this development.

In addition to new hardware optimized specifically for Linux, we support free software through our own events and community activities. The Game Jam and the Road to Game Jam form the centerpiece of our in-house event program this year – complemented by established formats like DI.DAY and other community meetups.
