TUXEDO OS without version numbers in the future

With the upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04.1, TUXEDO OS will no longer use version numbers. Instead of continuing as expected with TUXEDO OS 4, our operating system will now simply be called TUXEDO OS.

Why did we make this decision?

TUXEDO OS is still a relatively young operating system. In September 2022, we launched TUXEDO OS 1, marking the starting point. Our software was not only pre-installed on TUXEDO devices or available via WebFAI, but could also be installed as an ISO image on any notebook. This openness brought more flexibility, especially regarding the partitioning of our devices.

Over time, we started to question the purpose of version numbers in TUXEDO OS and what criteria we should base them on. TUXEDO OS uses a hybrid release model that combines elements of rolling and point releases. This means the system updates almost daily, keeping important applications always up-to-date. However, the underlying system, which is not visible or noticeable to the user, remains constant. Our own tools are also continuously developed.

In this semi-rolling model with a stable base, we now consider version numbers unnecessary and will therefore consciously stop using them in the future.
