Debian installations at TUXEDO to feature Tomte Light as standard in future

With the announcement of TUXEDO Tomte Light as a new multi-distro tool for hardware fixes, we have taken an important step toward a unified, package-based, and cross-distribution installation and configuration logic.

After nearly two months of productive use in WebFAI and multi-distro scenarios, the next logical step now follows: TUXEDO Tomte Light is from now on the new standard for Debian installations. This unifies the installation path for Debian-based systems and creates a stable foundation for the further expansion of our fix and board package ecosystem.

Proven in productive use

TUXEDO Tomte Light has been in productive use for almost two months – among other things in WebFAI and for the automated application of our TUXEDO fix packages across multiple distributions.

During this time, the following characteristics in particular have proven their value:

  • stable and reproducible workflows for new installations
  • clean integration into our package infrastructure
  • a unified, maintainable installation path across multiple distributions

Based on these experiences, we are now also switching the Debian standard to tuxedo-tomte-light.

What changes for Debian users?

New installations

For new Debian installations, TUXEDO Tomte Light will now be used automatically to set up the required hardware-related adjustments.

Existing installations

The transition is carried out via a so-called transitional package. Existing systems are automatically and transparently migrated to the new standard path. A manual migration is therefore not required.

No functional change on Debian

On Debian, no NVIDIA-specific logic has ever been part of the installation standard. Therefore, switching to TUXEDO Tomte Light results in no functional change compared to previous behavior. Hardware-related adjustments continue to be handled exclusively via the designated fix packages.

Why we are switching the Debian standard

With TUXEDO Tomte Light, we are pursuing a clear technical approach:

  • fully package-based implementation of all adjustments
  • clearly defined and testable rules
  • identical workflows across multiple distributions

This approach is particularly robust and more maintainable in the long term, especially for Debian and for variants outside of classic LTS scenarios.

For our QA and installation processes, this means:

  • unified test paths
  • identical logic for WebFAI and local installations
  • simplified validation of new fix packages

Board meta packages as a central component

A central element of TUXEDO Tomte Light are the new board meta packages. A board meta package describes a specific device or mainboard and automatically recommends all required fix packages for it, for example for kernel parameters, initramfs adjustments, services, and configuration files.

The board meta packages are currently being rolled out and will gradually be provided for all devices that require specific adjustments. As soon as a board or vendor meta package is available for a system, TUXEDO Tomte Light detects and installs it automatically during each run. New or updated board packages are thus integrated into existing systems without manual intervention.

When is a board meta package required?

If no board meta package is installed for a device, this does not mean that something is missing. In such cases, no specific board meta package is required for the respective model, as all necessary adjustments are already fully covered by the regular fix packages. TUXEDO Tomte Light automatically checks during each run whether a suitable board or vendor meta package exists and installs it only if it is intended for the respective device.

What TUXEDO Tomte Light deliberately does not cover

TUXEDO Tomte Light is designed as a lean and clearly defined component. Its scope does not include:

  • NVIDIA and hybrid GPU special logic
  • removal or cleanup of old kernels
  • general driver updates outside of fix packages
  • selective blocking of individual fix packages
  • an extensive interactive command-line interface

The focus lies exclusively on the automated, reproducible, and package-based application of our fix and board packages.

Outlook: NVIDIA integration via the nvidia-driver-assistant

As a next development step, we plan to integrate NVIDIA functionality into the overall process via the existing nvidia-driver-assistant. NVIDIA configuration will continue to be handled through a separate, script-based workflow. In this scenario, TUXEDO Tomte Light will only orchestrate the installation and configuration process, while NVIDIA-specific logic remains bundled in the nvidia-driver-assistant. The goal is to enable an automatable and reproducible integration into our multi-distro and WebFAI workflows also for systems with NVIDIA graphics.

Scope of the transition

The transition exclusively affects Debian installations. For users of TUXEDO OS based on Ubuntu Noble as well as for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble), nothing changes with this step. In these environments, TUXEDO Tomte continues to be used as before.

Availability

TUXEDO Tomte Light is available via our official package repositories. Instructions on how to add the TUXEDO software repositories can be found in our updated guide. Further technical background on TUXEDO Tomte Light is available in our previous announcement.

With the introduction of TUXEDO Tomte Light as the standard for Debian, we are creating a unified, maintainable, and future-proof foundation for our installation and configuration processes – and another building block for a consistent multi-distribution strategy.

Please include your order number, the model name of your laptop or PC and as detailed a description of your request as possible. The more details you give us, the faster we can process your request!

We might not be able to answer questions about third party hardware or software. For questions about popular open source software (Thunderbird, Filezilla...) please contact a forum e.g. ubuntuforums.org. The research effort for application specific setup is immense and not manageable at the current time. Basic compatibility questions e.g. are of course still welcome!

Free shipping within Germany

There are no shipping costs within Germany for goods worth €100 or more.

No matter how many small articles you order, such as USB stick card reader, LAN adapters or fan articles, with us, you pay a maximum of 7.99 € shipping costs.

International delivery

Here are the shipping costs as well as the amount threshold for your order. The threshold is referring to the total amount of your order, which enables free shipping.
 

Taxes and customs outside the EU:

For orders outside the EU there might be additional duties, taxes or charges needed to be paid by the customer. These don't have to be paid to the supplier, but to local authorities. Please check for any details with your local customs or tax authorities before ordering! But as a benefit you don't have to pay German taxes, this means you save up to 19%!
Due to the Brexit and the associated changes, there may be delays of several days in customs clearance on site for deliveries to the UK. This is not within our sphere of influence.

The processing of orders outside the EU may currently be subject to significant delays due to the respective customs authorities. Unfortunately, we have no influence over this and therefore ask you to check your shipment tracking daily. If the status of your shipment does not change for more than a week, please contact our customer service.

Time of delivery

If not stated differently in the article's description, we deliver goods in:

  • 7-10 working days within Germany
  • 10-12 working days outside Germany

For orders paid in advance, the delivery time starts with receipt of the payment. Please keep in mind that there is no delivery on Sundays or on holidays.
For goods delivered as download, there will be no shipping fees due.
Access data for downloads are sent out via e-mail 1-3 working days after contract formation. For orders with advanced payment, we will deliver after receiving the payment. You can download the item by using the link sent to you via e-mail.
