This Week in TUXEDO OS #12-2025

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

Spring is just around the corner and our little goblin Tomte has woken up from hibernation and brought another update to your computers this week. The FAI, the basis of our WebFAI, has also been revised. The temperatures are slowly inviting us to travel again. KTrip, our KDE app of the week, will help you with this. We also offer tips & tricks for secure deletion in the terminal. Enjoy reading,
The TUXEDO OS Team

  • TUXEDO OS Updates
    • tuxedo-tomte 2.47.0
    • FAI Update 6.0.5–1.5.0

  • What else has happened?
  • Ubuntu Security Updates
  • Current BIOS/EC Versions

We would like to keep you updated on the latest developments in TUXEDO OS with the TWIX series and introduce you to exciting applications as well as practical tips related to the KDE desktop and TUXEDO OS. However, this section should not be a one-way street: your feedback, ideas, and suggestions for improvement are very welcome! For this purpose, we have created a thread on Reddit, where you can reach us directly.

KDE App of the Week: KTrip - a digital travel assistant

A well-known German proverb says: If someone goes on a journey, they have a story to tell. To ensure that your journey ends on a positive note, KDE offers the app KTrip, which assists you in navigating public transportation. KTrip allows you to search for trips between specific locations, check departures for a particular station, and view real-time delay and disruption information. It enables querying trips for various countries and public transport providers using the KPublicTransport library.

The providers of information and services that KTrip can currently process come from all countries of the European Union, Switzerland, the USA, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Tunisia.

After entering the departure location and destination, all connections for the desired time frame are displayed.
After entering the departure location and destination, all connections for the desired time frame are displayed.

Clicking the small icon next to the platform opens OpenStreetMap, displaying the station, its surroundings, and platform locations.

The app was developed by Volker Krause, whose more comprehensive travel assistant, KDE Itinerary, we already introduced in TWIX KW41–2024. KTrip is available for installation via Discover and Flathub. For Android, you can find the application on F-Droid.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Secure Deletion in the Terminal with trash-cli

Anyone working in a graphical desktop environment is familiar with the concept of a recycle bin: deleted files do not immediately disappear into oblivion but can be restored if needed. Only when using Ctrl+Del are files permanently removed. However, in the terminal, there is no such safety net—anyone using the rm command deletes files irreversibly. Fortunately, for those who want to be on the safe side, there is a solution: trash-cli.

trash-cli offers helpful comand option for secure deletion of files and folders in the terminal
trash-cli offers helpful command options for secure deletion of files and folders in the terminal

Installation

On TUXEDO OS and other Debian-/Ubuntu-based distributions, trash-cli can be easily installed via the package manager:

sudo apt install trash-cli

Once installed, a number of useful commands are available that allow files to be moved to the recycle bin instead of being deleted immediately.

Commands

Move files to the recycle bin

Instead of using rm, you can use trash-put to move the specified files and folders to the recycle bin. Wildcards can be used as well.

trash-put file1.md example*.* myfolder

This moves file1.md, all files starting with „example,“ and the folder „myfolder“ to the user’s recycle bin instead of permanently deleting them. From there, they can be restored or permanently removed.

View the contents of the recycle bin

To see which files are currently in the recycle bin, use the following command:

trash-list

Example output:

2025-03-13 16:14:23 /home/tuxedo/example2.py
2025-03-13 16:14:23 /home/tuxedo/example1.txt
2025-03-13 16:14:23 /home/tuxedo/myfolder
2025-03-13 16:14:32 /home/tuxedo/file1.md

This displays not only the deleted files but also their original location and the date they were deleted.

Restore files

To restore a file from the recycle bin, use:

trash-restore

Example output:

0 2025-03-13 16:09:38 /home/tuxedo/example2.py
1 2025-03-13 16:09:38 /home/tuxedo/example1.txt
2 2025-03-13 16:09:38 /home/tuxedo/myfolder
3 2025-03-13 16:09:38 /home/tuxedo/file1.md
What file to restore [0..3]: 0-1

Alternatively, to restore a specific folder:

trash-restore myfolder

Example output:

0 2025-03-13 16:09:38 /home/tuxedo/myfolder
What file to restore [0..0]: 0

The tool lists deleted files and asks which one to restore. By entering the corresponding number (e.g., 3) or a range (e.g., 0–2), the files are restored to their original location in the directory tree.

Empty the recycle bin

To permanently empty the recycle bin, use:

trash-empty

Example output:

Would empty the following trash directories:
    - /home/tuxedo/.local/share/Trash
Proceed? (y/n) y

This removes all files from the recycle bin permanently.

Why not just replace rm with trash-put?

One might consider replacing rm with trash-put using a shell alias:

alias rm='trash-put'

However, since Bash aliases only apply to interactive shells, scripts would still use the original rm. This is not recommended.

The reason: If you’re used to the default behavior of rm, you might unconsciously expect files to be permanently deleted. Additionally, rm is often used with options like -rf, which could lead to unexpected behavior. A safer alternative is to create a separate alias, such as del:

alias del='trash-put'

This leaves rm unchanged while allowing files to be moved to the recycle bin using del.

Conclusion

For terminal users looking for a safety net when deleting files, trash-cli provides a simple and effective solution. Just like in a graphical interface, files can first be moved to the recycle bin and restored if needed. This prevents accidental data loss and offers a convenient alternative to the irreversible rm command.

What else has happened?

Internally, we have made further progress in automating the building and packaging of applications with GitLab-CI. This change affects packages we maintain, including Firefox, Thunderbird and Mesa.
