This Week in TUXEDO OS #18-2026

2026-05-01 18:00:00

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

Supercomputers and Linux have shaped the leading edge of high-performance computing for many years. Since November 2017, the TOP500 list has shown that all of the world’s most powerful systems run on this free operating system. Without Linux, many scientific breakthroughs in astrophysics, particle physics, and chemistry would hardly have been possible. Its open architecture enables research at the highest level and makes complex simulations feasible in the first place.

An interesting chapter in supercomputing history is the era of PlayStation clusters shortly after the turn of the millennium. With Sony’s Linux for PlayStation, it was possible to build unusually powerful compute clusters from the PS3, such as in the well-known project at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The combination of low-cost hardware and parallel computing power made these systems surprisingly competitive in research for a time.

With the PlayStation 3 Slim, experiments with Linux clusters came to an end as Sony significantly restricted support. The PS4 also brought little new momentum to this idea. Only the PlayStation 5 is once again stirring interest in Linux on Sony’s console, as modders find ways to run Linux on the current generation. Projects such as ps5-linux-loader demonstrate these approaches, even though the hack is still far from being suitable for everyday use.

Back in the world of TUXEDO OS, this week’s TWIX takes a look at Earth from above. With Marble, you get a virtual globe on your desktop that brings OpenStreetMap data and historical maps right to your screen. We also explore some of Dolphin’s more subtle features that can make everyday file management easier. As always, we close with an overview of the latest changes and updates in TUXEDO OS.

Enjoy reading,

KDE App of the Week: Exploring the Earth with KDE Marble

With KDE Marble, we present an application that can be seen as a free and open alternative to Google Earth. However, Marble places a stronger focus on a versatile, resource-efficient virtual globe that is equally suitable for everyday use, travel, and education.

The view from space onto Earth clearly demonstrates Marble’s capabilities. You always have access to a complete world atlas directly on your system.

OpenStreetMap and a world atlas in one app

Marble offers a variety of map views such as political maps, satellite imagery, and topographic representations. It also includes specialized content like historical maps or night views of the Earth. A major advantage is offline usage: maps can be stored locally and used completely without an internet connection.

In daily use, Marble impresses with features such as navigation, route planning for different transport modes like car or bicycle, and integration of external data sources such as OpenStreetMap or Wikipedia. Thanks to its modular architecture, the application can be extended flexibly and adapted to different requirements.

Marble integrates various map sources such as OpenStreetMap and historical atlases, combining them in a single application so you can easily switch between different views.

Route planning is also built in: routes can be calculated for cars, bicycles, or pedestrians and displayed directly on the map, making it easy to plan and follow journeys.

Navigation by car or bike included

The user interface follows the familiar KDE conventions and remains intentionally streamlined. Marble starts quickly, responds instantly, and runs smoothly even on older hardware. You can install the application conveniently via Discover or through the classic package manager. Marble is also available via Flathub, providing you with the latest version.

Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Setting up the Trash in KDE Plasma

Working with files is one of the core tasks of a desktop environment. In TUXEDO OS and KDE Plasma, this is handled by the Dolphin file manager. With features such as tabs, an integrated terminal, or a split-view layout, Dolphin is one of the most flexible and powerful tools for everyday file management.

Compared to the Windows File Explorer, Dolphin offers many additional features that noticeably simplify workflows. For example, if you want to delete several files one after another, you do not need to select them in advance. Simply pressing Del repeatedly is enough, as the next file is automatically selected.

Info: If you also hold down the Shift key while pressing Del, you bypass the trash and permanently delete files. Keep in mind that this action cannot be undone. Regular deletions, however, can be restored as usual with Ctrl+Z, allowing you to quickly correct accidental actions.

A double-click on an empty area in the folder view is also useful: similar to Ctrl+A, it selects all files in the current directory. This behavior can be customized under Configure » Configure Dolphin… and, for example, set to open a terminal or create new files.

How should Dolphin behave when you double-click an empty area in a folder, and which action – such as opening a terminal or creating files – should be executed?

In the settings, you can also adjust the behavior of the trash. For example, you can automatically permanently delete files after a certain period or limit the maximum size of the trash. This is particularly useful if you regularly work with large amounts of data and want to save storage space.

Taxes and customs outside the EU:

For orders outside the EU there might be additional duties, taxes or charges needed to be paid by the customer. These don't have to be paid to the supplier, but to local authorities. Please check for any details with your local customs or tax authorities before ordering! But as a benefit you don't have to pay German taxes, this means you save up to 19%!
Due to the Brexit and the associated changes, there may be delays of several days in customs clearance on site for deliveries to the UK. This is not within our sphere of influence.

The processing of orders outside the EU may currently be subject to significant delays due to the respective customs authorities. Unfortunately, we have no influence over this and therefore ask you to check your shipment tracking daily. If the status of your shipment does not change for more than a week, please contact our customer service.

Thank you for your understanding!
