Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!
It has been an exciting week for the developers of the KDE project. Yesterday, the first beta release of Plasma 6.7 was published as the next major release of the Plasma desktop, which is also used by TUXEDO OS. The standout new feature is a technical preview of the new theming and styling system Union , designed to bring a more consistent look and feel to the desktop. An even bigger reason to celebrate came just a few days ago, in the form of a substantial investment in the digital freedom of the Linux desktop.
Funding from the Sovereign Tech Fund
The German Sovereign Tech Fund (STF) is investing a total of 1.5 MIO USD in KDE software , spread across 2026 and 2027. The funding program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs aims to strengthen open digital base technologies that are critical for competitiveness, innovation, and IT security. The earmarked funds will go towards concrete improvements: quality assurance for KDE Plasma and the still-in-development distribution KDE Linux, recovery and backup mechanisms, security infrastructure for organizational use, and a modernized configuration management system.
An Important Signal for Digital Sovereignty
For Europe’s digital sovereignty and the move away from Big Tech from the US, this funding sends an important signal. KDE enables individuals, businesses, and public authorities to regain control over their own digital infrastructure. Too many open source and Linux projects are underfunded — a situation that has already led to serious security vulnerabilities on more than one occasion. Rather than treating open source as free labor, the Sovereign Tech Fund is committed to the long-term maintenance of that infrastructure layer which industry relies upon but rarely pays for.
With this investment, the fund now supports both major Linux desktop ecosystems. The GNOME Foundation already received one million euros from the STF back in 2023 . Together with the funding of KDE, this sends a clear message: those who take digital independence seriously must also be willing to fund it.

KDE App of the Week: Advanced Weather Widget
Whether it’s a road bike ride, a quick run, or an after-work walk – the weather often decides your plans at short notice. Classic forecasts help, but a look at the rain radar is even more practical. It lets you see at a glance when a shower is approaching or how long it will stay dry. This is precisely where this week’s app comes in, bringing that information straight to your desktop.
The Advanced Weather Widget can be integrated into the panel to save space and expanded with a click, giving you quick and clear access to current weather data and forecasts.
The Advanced Weather Widget is not a traditional application but an extension for KDE Plasma. You can place it flexibly in the panel or directly on the desktop. This way, you always have current weather data in view without needing to open a separate app, making it especially convenient for everyday use.
Live rain radar for the KDE desktop
With version 1.5, the widget gains a particularly useful feature: integrated rain radar. Different layers allow you to visualize precipitation, clouds, or wind. While a basic radar works out of the box, you can unlock additional details with a free API key from OpenWeatherMap and customize the widget to your needs.
Alternatively, you can place the widget directly on the desktop to keep the weather in view at all times. The integrated rain radar clearly shows upcoming developments over the next hours.
With an OpenWeatherMap API key, you can extend the widget with additional maps for wind, temperature, or air pressure, giving you deeper insights into current weather conditions.
In addition, the overall presentation has been significantly improved. An optional „Simple Mode“ reduces the interface to the essentials, while new layouts provide more flexibility for forecasts. Date and time can also be integrated, including a small calendar view. The forecast range has been extended as well, now covering up to 16 days.
Beyond new features, the widget also benefits from various refinements. Performance has been improved, the interface streamlined, and redundant elements removed. Helpful hints assist with setup, for example, if required dependencies are missing. Overall, the Advanced Weather Widget shows how easily Plasma can be extended with practical functionality.
Installing the Advanced Weather Widget
You can install the widget directly from the KDE Store. Right-click on the desktop and select Enter Edit Mode . Then go to Add or Manage Widgets… » Get New… » Download New Plasma Widgets . Search for „Advanced Weather“ to find the correct entry. Click Install to add it, then drag it from the overview to your desired position.
Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This Week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.
TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Football in the Terminal with Golazo
As a Linux user, you’ve probably heard the usual clichés: everything happens in the terminal, and graphical applications are supposedly scarce. Of course, that’s far from the truth – Linux offers a huge range of comfortable desktop applications. Still, the terminal has its own appeal, especially when small tools deliver creative solutions you wouldn’t necessarily expect.
Results and live data from around the world
A great example of this is Golazo . This lightweight command-line tool brings live football straight into your terminal, showing ongoing matches with events such as goals, cards, and substitutions almost in real time. During major tournaments like the upcoming World Cup or key matches like the Champions League final, it can be a surprisingly practical alternative.
Golazo lets you review results and events from recent days, making it easy to catch up on missed matches directly in the terminal and analyze them at a glance.
In addition to the live timeline, Golazo provides detailed statistics such as possession, shots, and lineups. It also includes links to official highlights and replays, allowing you to jump to video content when needed. Finished matches from recent days are easily accessible as well, helping you stay on top of everything.
Choose from more than 50 leagues, cups, and international competitions, and keep track of exactly the tournaments that matter most to you.
More than 50 leagues and international competitions
Support for a wide range of leagues worldwide is another strong point. Golazo organizes competitions by region and presents them clearly in the terminal. You can even enable desktop notifications for goals, ensuring you never miss a key moment – even if the terminal is running in the background.
The terminal interface is intentionally minimal, yet it provides all essential information, such as score, events, and match timeline, to follow a game even without live video.
To install Golazo on TUXEDO OS, you first need the Go programming language. Then download the source code and compile it locally. You can run the binary directly from the build directory or move it to ~/.local/bin to make it available system-wide and launch it conveniently via golazo .
Install Go
sudo apt install golang-go
Build Golazo
cd /tmp
git clone https://github.com/0xjuanma/golazo.git
cd golazo
go build
Cleanup
mv golazo ~/.local/bin
rm -rf ~/go
rm -rf /tmp/golazo
While Golazo is certainly no replacement for a full live broadcast, it demonstrates just how flexible and versatile the Linux terminal can be. And if the worst case happens – the TV fails, the browser crashes, and even your smartphone won’t cooperate – you can still keep track of the match at all times.
