Our developer penguins recently got new ultrawide monitors and quickly realized that more screen space also calls for more organization. Instead of painstakingly arranging windows by hand, they dove into KDE Plasma’s tiling features. With the built-in tiling and the KWin script Karousel, windows can now be arranged much more intelligently – perfect for wide displays and efficient workflows.

In this issue, we’ll show you how to make the most of tiling in TUXEDO OS, which keyboard shortcuts will help you, and what improvements are coming with Plasma 6.4. KDE App of the Week: Windows perfectly positioned with plasma tiling

The KDE App of the Week is more of a feature than a classic application this time: tiling, which has been part of Plasma—and therefore your TUXEDO OS—since February 2023. It was introduced with Plasma 5.27. We already covered native tiling in a dedicated article. Since then, it has been enhanced with numerous practical features.

What is tiling, anyway?

In graphical user interfaces, tiling refers to arranging windows in a tile-like layout. The windows are automatically split up next to each other in a space-saving way, without overlapping. This ensures the available screen space is used efficiently, and multiple applications remain visible at once — ideal for productive work.

When people speak of native tiling, they usually mean specialized window managers such as herbstluftwm, dwm, i3(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I3_(window_manager), or its Wayland counterpart Sway. But desktop environments like KDE Plasma (and, to a lesser extent, GNOME) now also offer built-in tiling functions. In Plasma, the KWin window manager takes care of this.

Tiling in Plasma 6.4

The KDE developers have also been busy and introduced new tiling features with Plasma 6.4 (our developers are still working on implementing the Plasma update). It is now possible to define individual tile layouts for each virtual desktop, allowing for significantly more flexible workflows. For example, a three-column layout can be used on Desktop 1, while Desktop 2 might feature a grid or a maximized window arrangement.

This innovation, along with the modular split of the KWin architecture for Wayland and X11, ranks among the long-awaited improvements to native tiling. The operation remains the same: Press Super+T to launch the tiling editor and modify the layout. Windows can be assigned to a tile by holding Shift and dragging them into place. Pressing Esc exits the editor and returns you to the normal desktop.

TUXEDO OS Tipps & Tricks: Tiling with Karousel for Ultrawide Displays

Anyone working with an ultrawide monitor often has special requirements for tiling behavior. The wide screen should be used as efficiently as possible—without constantly having to move windows around manually. In this case, the KWin script Karousel can be an interesting solution.

You can install the script via System Settings » Window Management » KWin Scripts. There, click Get New… and search for Karousel. With a single click on Install…, the script will be added. Note: The version list is not sorted in descending order—so the latest version may not appear at the top.

Next, activate the Karousel script in the KWin Scripts list. From now on, Karousel will handle window placement. Windows are not automatically maximized in width but only adjusted in height. The width can still be changed as usual with the mouse pointer.

Karousel automatically lines up new windows to the right. Use Tux+A and Tux+D to switch between windows to the left and right, respectively. With Tux+Shift+A or Tux+Shift+D, you can move the current window in the desired direction. Karousel rearranges it intelligently—allowing even intermediate positions with half-height next to a neighboring windows.

With Tux+Space, you remove a window from the tiling grid. It can then be freely moved around the desktop – without any tiling restrictions. Pressing the key combination again reintegrates the application window back into the tiling layout.
