This Week in TUXEDO OS #32-2026

2026-08-07 18:00:00

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

Generative AI in software development needs guidelines. Even the major players, including OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic—agree on that. This is even more important in the Free Software world, where expectations regarding copyright and privacy are generally higher than for most proprietary AI models.

Linus Torvalds recently sparked discussion by stating that the Linux kernel is not anti-AI and that anyone who disagrees is free to fork the project or move on. Yesterday, his deputy, Greg Kroah-Hartman, has introduced a new policy for the drivers/staging/ kernel subsystem under his responsibility. The policy prohibits LLM-generated contributions, allowing only a narrowly defined exception. It was prompted by a surge of LLM-generated patch submissions to that directory. The rationale is straightforward: the subsystem serves as a training ground for new kernel developers, where they are expected to learn the conventions and practices of kernel development. This is therefore not at odds with Torvalds' statement. Both share the same view: AI is a tool, not a substitute for responsibility.

That responsibility now also extends to anyone distributing AI-generated content. This week, the European AI Act entered into force in the European Union. Among other provisions, it introduces labeling requirements for many AI-generated texts and images.

This edition of TWIX is not about AI, even though it is increasingly finding its way into open source applications. Instead, our App of the Week is the Plasma screenshot utility Spectacle. In our Tips section, we explain how to send your smartphone’s clipboard to your desktop using KDE Connect and discuss some of the pitfalls you may encounter under Wayland. As always, we also take a look at the latest package updates and improvements that help keep TUXEDO OS reliable and user-friendly.

KDE App of the Week: Spectacular Screenshots

Screenshots are part of everyday computing, whether for support requests, documentation, or simply capturing an error message. TUXEDO OS includes Spectacle by default, KDE Plasma’s screenshot tool. Since Plasma 6.6, Spectacle has gained a useful new feature: text recognition via OCR.

For a long time, Spectacle has supported all the standard capture modes: the entire screen, a single window, a freely selected area, or a rectangular region. Its built-in annotation toolbar lets you add arrows, shapes, or text before saving the screenshot, copying it to the clipboard, inserting it into another application, or exporting it to Nextcloud or Google Drive.

OCR at your fingertips

Starting with Plasma 6.6, Spectacle also includes the previously mentioned OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature, powered by the Tesseract engine. This allows you to select and copy text directly from a screenshot, eliminating the need to retype it manually in many situations. The entire process runs locally, so no data is sent to external services.

Currently, OCR is limited to Spectacle itself. According to the developers, however, the underlying code is planned to be moved into a shared library, allowing other KDE applications to benefit from the same functionality in the future.

The OCR feature saves the extracted text in the system's default editor

Everything you need

For most day-to-day tasks, Spectacle provides everything you need. If you require more advanced features, Ksnip is well worth considering as an alternative. Also written with Qt, it stands out particularly for its more extensive annotation capabilities. Ksnip supports OCR as well, although it requires an additional plugin. On the other hand, it is available not only for Linux but also for Windows and macOS, making it a good choice for anyone who prefers the same screenshot tool across multiple platforms. If you work exclusively on Linux, however, the preinstalled Spectacle with its built-in OCR functionality will likely be more than sufficient. On TUXEDO OS, Spectacle can be launched directly by pressing the Print Screen key or via the corresponding entries in the application menu.

Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Sending the Phone Clipboard to KDE

KDE Connect enables clipboard sharing between your smartphone and your computer. While transferring content from the PC to the phone works seamlessly, the reverse direction requires a few details to consider with TUXEDO OS, KDE Plasma, and Wayland.

The reason lies in Wayland’s architecture: Applications do not get direct access to the clipboard but instead use defined interfaces such as Wayland portals. This additional security layer prevents applications from accessing copied content unnoticed.

Automatic sync only works towards the smartphone

Under X11, automatic clipboard synchronisation works directly, while KDE Connect under Wayland cannot always trigger receiving clipboard content from Android automatically. In this case, use the integrated Send Clipboard function in the KDE Connect app on your smartphone.

To do so, copy the desired text on your smartphone and open the KDE Connect app. Select your connected device and transfer the current clipboard content using the Send Clipboard button. The content will then be available directly on your computer – even in a pure Wayland session.

The
The „Send Clipboard“ function in KDE Connect allows you to manually transfer copied content from your smartphone to your TUXEDO computer running Wayland.
Under Wayland, KDE Connect's automatic clipboard synchronisation may only work in one direction. Content from your smartphone can be sent manually when required.

Ubuntu Security Updates

The Ubuntu security updates listed here are generally incorporated directly into TUXEDO OS. Some updates are only available from Ubuntu for a fee and are therefore not made available to the community until a later date. Unfortunately, we have no control over this:

  • USN-8625–1: OpenSSL vulnerability: It was discovered that OpenSSL incorrectly allocated memory buffers in the SSL/TLS state machine when receiving handshake data. A remote attacker could possibly use this issue to cause OpenSSL to consume excessive memory, leading to a denial of service. This issue is known as the “HollowByte” denial of service.

Contact

We are personally there for you Monday to Friday from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm (German time). But also outside these times, you can contact our team with your request by e-mail. You will receive confirmation of receipt within approximately 15 minutes. If not, please feel free to contact us by phone. Please include your order number, the model name of your laptop or PC and as detailed a description of your request as possible. The more details you give us, the faster we can process your request!

We might not be able to answer questions about third party hardware or software. For questions about popular open source software (Thunderbird, Filezilla...) please contact a forum e.g. ubuntuforums.org. The research effort for application specific setup is immense and not manageable at the current time. Basic compatibility questions e.g. are of course still welcome!

An extra function is available in your customer account for repair requests (RMA).
