This Week in TUXEDO OS #39-2025

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

Autumn is here – the leaves are falling. The mood at headquarters in Augsburg is good. Our penguins are tinkering with new devices, diligently coding new features, and fixing bugs. A new ISO image of TUXEDO OS, including all updates up to September 23, has also been pushed out from the ice floe. Furthermore, the penguins have been working diligently on Plasma 6.4.5, which they will release soon. As KDE App of the Week, we present KFind; the TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks explain how you can use your smartphone as a mouse replacement on your desktop.

Enjoy reading,

KDE App of the Week: Search and Find with KFind

Data often accumulates faster than it can be neatly organized. When you need to search for something, the powerful Linux command-line program find comes in handy. Since this requires advanced knowledge of command syntax, KDE Plasma implements the most important search parameters for everyday use in the graphical application KFind.

KFind, which comes preinstalled with TUXEDO OS, can be launched as a standalone application via the main menu or with KRunner using ALT+Space. If you are already working in the Dolphin file manager, you can start KFind from the menu under More » Tools » Open KFind or with the shortcut SHIFT+CTRL+F. In this case, the current folder is preselected. In contrast to Dolphin’s integrated search function, which uses the index-based tool Baloo, KFind performs a direct file system scan. While this may be slower than Baloo’s indexed search, it has proven in practice to be more thorough and reliable.

Searching and finding

When KFind is launched from Dolphin, simply enter a search term in the Named field and click Find at the top right or press Enter. When started externally, you also need to specify a search path under Look in. The results appear in the area below. You can stop the search at any time by clicking Stop. The current search status is displayed at the bottom of the window.

Search options and wildcards

In the Name/Location tab, you can also enable options such as Include subfolders, Case sensitive search, Show hidden files, and Use files index. The latter makes use of a previously created index from the locate tool to increase search speed. The Contents tab allows you to restrict the search to a wide range of file types. You can also specify Containing text and even include binary files. With the Search metainfo sections option, KFind can scan metadata in images, eBooks, audio, and video files. This lets you find, for example, photos taken with a specific camera or determine the bitrate of an audio file.

KFind can limit the search to many different file types

The third tab, Properties, enables searches by attributes such as creation or modification date, file size, owner, and group. Wildcards include asterisk, question mark, and to a limited extent, regular expressions.

In summary, KFind offers a user-friendly interface for most common search tasks but does not cover the full functionality of the command-line find tool.

Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This Week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks:

KDE Connect is one of the flagship projects of the KDE desktop. This extremely useful application connects your Android or iOS smartphone with your Linux, macOS, or the Windows desktop. But did you know that you can also use KDE Connect to turn your smartphone into a wireless virtual mouse for your desktop? Imagine you’re heading to an off-site appointment or giving a presentation and suddenly notice that your notebook’s touchpad has stopped working. Here’s how KDE Connect can save the day.

The only requirement is that KDE Connect is installed on both your notebook and your smartphone, and that both devices are paired in the same network. To do this, send a pairing request from the desktop under KDE Connect in the system settings to your smartphone. If the device does not appear in the device list, click Refresh before pairing. You can also initiate the pairing from the smartphone side.

Steps to use a smartphone as a mouse with KDE Connect

  • Open the KDE Connect app on your smartphone
  • Select the paired desktop device in the app
  • Tap on the entry Remote Input
  • Confirm the request on the desktop to allow remote control

You can now move your finger across the smartphone’s screen to control the mouse pointer. Tap the screen to simulate a left click, and use two or three fingers for right or middle click. Use two fingers to scroll and a long press to drag objects. More gesture options are available when you tap the gear icon in the top right corner.

When you select Remote Input on the left screen, you will then, after confirmation on the desktop, see the window showing how to use the smartphone as a mouse

Clicking the cogwheel on the top right offers more gestures for you to use. When you no longer need remote control, disconnect the connection by tapping the three-dots menu on the smartphone and selecting Disconnect.

Contact

We are personally there for you Monday to Friday from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm (German time). But also outside these times you can contact our team with your request by e-mail. Please include your customer number, the model name of your laptop or PC and as detailed a description of your request as possible. The more details you give us, the faster we can process your request!

We might not be able to answer questions about third party hardware or software. For questions about popular open source software (Thunderbird, Filezilla...) please contact a forum e.g. ubuntuforums.org. The research effort for application specific setup is immense and not manageable at the current time. Basic compatibility questions e.g. are of course still welcome!

An extra function is available in your customer account for repair requests (RMA).
