Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!
Plasma 6.8 is about to be released: the KDE developers have brought the beta into its final phase, and the release is planned for October 14 . What matters most is what is missing: for the first time, Plasma no longer ships an X11 session , and Wayland is the only option at login.
Plasma 6.7 therefore remains the last version with an X11 session , which KDE says it will maintain until early 2027. Programs written for X11 continue to run through Xwayland. According to KDE, most users are already on Wayland anyway. Anyone who depends on an X11 session should therefore plan the move to Wayland in good time.
This week, we introduce Minuet, a KDE program for ear training. In the tip of the week, we show how to find files and commands in the terminal with fzf and keep an eye on processes with btop. You can find what has happened around TUXEDO OS in the updates overview.

Updates in TUXEDO OS
firefox 2:157.0~tux1, 2:157.0.1~tux1
157.0: Update to Firefox 157.0 with a revised interface, new light and dark themes, and a compact mode. The new sidebar is now active for everyone.
157.0.1: Bug fixes, including one for a sidebar that could freeze in the bookmarks or AI chatbot area. The version also contains a security fix.
For more information, see the official release notes for Firefox 157.0 and Firefox 157.0.1 .
systeminfos-script 3.0.22
3.0.21: The script now also reads out the version of the Intel Management Engine (ME).
3.0.22: The crash logs have been removed temporarily.
Important Security Updates
firefox 2:157.0.1~tux1
Fixes a security vulnerability of moderate severity (CVE-2026–106016): a protective measure in file handling could be bypassed.
For details, see the security advisory MFSA 2026–104 .
KDE App of the Week: Minuet – Ear Training with KDE
Recognizing intervals, picking out chords, clapping back rhythms: people who learn an instrument usually train their ear with textbooks and listening examples. Minuet from the KDE project takes over this task on your computer. The program plays exercises, you enter your answer and immediately see whether it is correct.
Minuet is licensed under the GPL and does not require an instrument. The sound is generated by the software synthesizer FluidSynth , so a notebook without a MIDI keyboard is all you need. After launching, you choose between the areas Chords, Intervals, Rhythm, and Scales in the sidebar. For intervals, Minuet distinguishes between ascending and descending melodic intervals as well as harmonic intervals, with exercises ranging from seconds to tenths. We have already introduced other educational programs from the KDE ecosystem: GCompris , Parley and KStars .
A click on „Give Up“ reveals the solution: Minuet shows the correct answer and marks the notes on the keyboard and the staff.
Exercises as a test with ten questions
If you want to practice a single task, click New Question . Minuet plays the interval, you choose the matching answer under Available Answers , and your selection appears under Your Answer(s) . A test started via Start Test consists of ten questions according to the display. With Play Question you hear the task again. If you get stuck, click Give Up : Minuet then shows the correct answer. You can interrupt a running test with Stop Test .
For intervals, a keyboard spanning several octaves and a staff display the notes. The Rhythm area works with note values instead: the answers are buttons with rhythm patterns, and the levels are called Easy and Medium . According to KDE, tempo, instrument, and the length of the test can also be adjusted. This information comes from the KDE project page and we have not verified it individually.
In the rhythm test, you pick the matching rhythm pattern instead of an interval. A test consists of ten questions.
Outlook: New interface with KDE Gear 26.08
Our tests and screenshots are based on the Flathub version 0.4.0.26042 from June 2026. At the time of testing, the repositories of TUXEDO OS contained 25.12.3. Both versions show the previous interface. With Gear 26.08 , KDE already lists the next version, which had not yet arrived on Flathub.
According to the announcement, Minuet receives a new interface for desktop and smartphone in this release. A start page with a sidebar organizes the exercises, and a searchable browser shows them as cards with a short description. On narrow windows, the exercise pages rearrange themselves. KDE also announces new types of exercises and additional platforms, but the project has not named any details so far. We will keep an eye on the development.
Installation
On TUXEDO OS, Minuet can be installed via Discover from Flathub . Alternatively, you can do this on the command line. The repositories of TUXEDO OS also contain the package minuet.
flatpak install flathub org.kde.minuet

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Searching and Monitoring in the Terminal with fzf and btop
If you work in the terminal often, you know the problem: the command you are looking for is somewhere in the history, the file is buried in a deeply nested folder, and the process that spins up the fan is hidden in a long list. Two small programs get this done faster: fzf for searching and btop for monitoring. We have covered terminal tools several times before, for example zoxide , SuperFile , Yazi and tfm . Our article The Shell – The Unknown Black Hole offers an introduction to the command line.
Installation
Both programs are available in the repositories of TUXEDO OS. At the time of testing, fzf 0.44.1 and btop 1.3.0 were available. For the file preview in fzf, bat is a useful addition, which starts as batcat on Ubuntu and therefore on TUXEDO OS as well.
apt install fzf btop bat
fzf: Fuzzy Search Any List
fzf reads arbitrary lines and filters them while you type. The letters do not have to follow each other directly. In the following example, fzf searches all files below the current folder and shows a preview of the highlighted file on the right.
find . -type f | fzf --preview "batcat --color=always --style=numbers {}"
With fzf, part of a file name is enough, and the list of matches shrinks with every letter. The preview on the right shows the contents of the highlighted file.
fzf becomes even more practical with the keyboard shortcuts for the shell. To enable them, add the following line to the file ~/.bashrc and then open a new terminal:
source /usr/share/doc/fzf/examples/key-bindings.bash
Shortcut
Effect
Ctrl +R
Searches your previous commands
Ctrl +T
Searches files and inserts the path at the prompt
Alt +C
Changes into a folder found by the search
btop: A System Monitor in the Terminal
btop shows processor, memory, drives, network, and process list in a single window. You start it with btop . The boxes can be toggled using the superscript numbers in the headings. Select processes in the list and end them using the buttons at the bottom edge.
btop combines processor, memory, drives, network, and process list in a single terminal window and keeps updating the values.
If you want to keep btop in view permanently, you can enter it as a startup command in Konsole Frame, which we introduced in TWIX #30–2026 .
Limitations
Neither tool has menus, so you need to memorize the shortcuts. The line eval "$(fzf --bash)" mentioned in the documentation of newer fzf versions does not work with version 0.44.1.
Our screenshots were taken in a virtual machine that does not provide any sensors. For this reason, btop does not show temperatures there. On real hardware, these values appear as long as the sensors are set up correctly, for example with lm-sensors.
If you prefer a graphical interface, use the Plasma System Monitor . You still control fans and performance profiles in the TUXEDO Control Center.
