This Week in TUXEDO OS #17-2026

2026-04-24 18:00:00

Hello TUXEDO Fans and Open-Source Enthusiasts!

Oh snap, it’s that time of the year again, late April is rolling in. Spring is in full swing: around Augsburg, fields are being ploughed and – noticeable even through the nose – fertilized. On the pastures, lush green is sprouting, and even from our TUXEDO headquarters you can see toward the Alps that the snow is slowly retreating.

For Ubuntu, this season means one thing above all: It’s LTS time – at least every two years. Soon, the ISOs for Ubuntu „Resolute Racoon“ 26.04 LTS are also available in our WebFAI. Early test reports are quite positive, and we’ve also already taken a closer look. For TUXEDO users, this means another freshly heated option in the distribution lineup.

There’s also movement on the kernel side: Linux 7.0 has been released by Linus Torvalds. At first glance, jumping from version 6.x to 7.x sounds like a major shift – but there’s no need for concern. Linus simply doesn’t like version numbers above twenty – after Linux x.19, it traditionally just becomes Linux y.0. No sweeping changes required for that.

In this week’s TWIX, we take a look at the vocabulary learning app Parley as well as the latest changes in Firefox 150, which are especially convenient for “chatters.” Emojis in web apps like WhatsApp can now be inserted much faster – a single keyboard shortcut is enough. And as always, we wrap up the latest developments around TUXEDO OS for you.

Enjoy reading,

However, this section should not be a one-way street: your feedback, ideas, and suggestions for improvement are very welcome! For this purpose, we have created a thread on Reddit, where you can reach us directly.

Updates in TUXEDO OS

Fix for LibreOffice 25.8.x

With LibreOffice 25.8.x, some users experienced an issue where individual modules would no longer start. As a temporary workaround, a complete reinstallation of the suite helped. The root cause was a corrupted registry file and has been fixed in the package tuxedo-common-settings. During updates, a corrected file is now automatically applied. The fix update will be included with the next system upgrade (more information).

Around the WebFAI

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS available in WebFAI

With Ubuntu 26.04 LTS „Resolute Racoon“, the next long-term support version has been available for installation since April 23, 2026. The ISOs will soon also be available in the WebFAI. Users already running Ubuntu can switch directly to 26.04 if needed. However, the regular upgrade path is typically only enabled with the first point release, Ubuntu 26.04.1. This update is currently scheduled for August (more information).

KDE App of the Week: Training your vocabulary with Parley

Our KDE App of the Week comes this time from the KDE Education Project, the educational branch of KDE. It is called Parley, a vocabulary trainer that can support you in learning languages or specialized knowledge. The open-source tool uses the proven Leitner system, a highly effective flashcard-based learning method built on the principle of spaced repetition.

On the overview page, you can create a new collection, open an existing one, or download new collections.

Core Features

Parley offers a wide range of exercise modes such as flashcards, multiple choice, writing tests, and anagrams, complemented by language-specific features like article training, conjugations, and synonyms. The integrated editor allows you to create your own vocabulary lists in Parley’s native KVTL format or import them from CSV files. Parley also provides vocabulary collections across various categories, including languages, anatomy, music, geography, and chemistry, which you can download directly within the application.

In addition to languages, new collections also provide access to terms from other fields of knowledge.

Installation

Parley is not preinstalled on TUXEDO OS but can be installed via the Discover software center either as a native Debian package or as a Flatpak. Alternatively, you can install it via the command line:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install parley

As a complement to tools like Artikulate, Parley is particularly suitable for advanced learners who want to systematically improve their vocabulary alongside pronunciation practice.

Info: Are you interested in Plasma development and want to know what new features are planned and which programs have been recently updated? You can find a detailed overview in the weekly column This week in Plasma by KDE developer Nate Graham.

TUXEDO OS Tips & Tricks: Emojis, Split View and PDF Editor in Firefox 150

With Firefox 150, Mozilla delivers an update that brings immediately noticeable improvements in everyday use. Several small but important friction points are removed, while existing features are meaningfully enhanced. Especially in combination with a modern Linux desktop like TUXEDO OS, it becomes clear how well integrated the browser has become. The following tips highlight the most important changes and show how to use emojis, Split View, and the PDF editor even more efficiently.

Insert emojis using a keyboard shortcut

Last week in TWIX 16–2024, we mentioned emoji input via the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+.. One drawback at the time was Firefox: pressing the shortcut simply did nothing. Just a few days later, the update to Firefox 150 provides the missing piece. Whether you are chatting in the WhatsApp web client or commenting on Reddit – you can now open the emoji picker with Ctrl+. and select the desired symbol.

In Firefox 150, the emoji picker can now be opened directly via the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl]+[.] and used seamlessly in web applications such as messengers or forums.

Open links directly in Split View

With Firefox 150, Split View evolves into a genuinely useful everyday tool. Links can now be opened directly in Split View via the context menu and appear immediately next to the current page. This reduces extra steps and makes parallel work significantly more comfortable. In addition, you can search through open tabs when setting up the view and freely adjust their arrangement or mirror them with just a few clicks.

Using the context menu in Firefox 150, links can be opened directly in Split View, allowing content to appear side by side with the current tab without extra steps.

In the updated Firefox 150, Split View can be adjusted or closed at any time by exiting the split layout and returning to the classic tab view.

Reorder, copy or delete pages in PDFs

Firefox 150 significantly enhances the built-in PDF editor. Pages can now be reordered, duplicated, or removed directly in the browser without launching additional software. Simply open a PDF from your downloads or drag and drop it into the browser window. However, features such as merging multiple documents are still missing – for that, tools like PDF Arranger or, in the future, Karp remain the better choice.

The built-in PDF editor in Firefox 150 allows pages within a document to be reordered, duplicated, or selectively removed.

Taxes and customs outside the EU:

For orders outside the EU there might be additional duties, taxes or charges needed to be paid by the customer. These don't have to be paid to the supplier, but to local authorities. Please check for any details with your local customs or tax authorities before ordering! But as a benefit you don't have to pay German taxes, this means you save up to 19%!
Due to the Brexit and the associated changes, there may be delays of several days in customs clearance on site for deliveries to the UK. This is not within our sphere of influence.

The processing of orders outside the EU may currently be subject to significant delays due to the respective customs authorities. Unfortunately, we have no influence over this and therefore ask you to check your shipment tracking daily. If the status of your shipment does not change for more than a week, please contact our customer service.

Thank you for your understanding!
