At TUXEDO, we make new Firefox versions available to you as quickly as possible after completing our internal testing. The same applies to the Firefox 140 version released today by Mozilla, which is now available to you via the regular TUXEDO OS update.

Improvements for Tab Users

Firefox 140 brings numerous useful innovations, some of which we would like to briefly introduce. Especially, users with many open tabs will benefit from this one: Tabs can now be deliberately put into sleep mode to save system resources. Although Firefox already deactivates tabs automatically when memory is low, with version 140 you decide yourself which tabs should be „put to sleep.“ To do this, right-click on a tab or a selected tab group and choose the new menu item Unload Tab. Clicking the tab later will reload it.

More Control and Convenience

Firefox recently introduced the option to move the tab bar to the left sidebar. Pinned tabs remain conveniently accessible there. With Firefox 140, the size of this area can now be flexibly adjusted: simply drag the blue line below the pinned tabs to the desired position.

There are also improvements regarding search engine integration: You can now add any search engine directly by right-clicking on a website’s search field. Alternatively, a search URL can be entered manually in the settings.

Pinned extensions are located in the Firefox toolbar for quick access. Extensions that are used less frequently can be accessed via an additional icon. New in Firefox 140: This icon can now be completely removed via right-click if not needed, providing better clarity, especially on small displays.

Another optimization concerns the built-in translation feature. To improve speed, only visible text will now be translated immediately when using full-page translation. Text areas outside the visible viewport will only be translated when scrolling.

New Features for Web Developers

Firefox 140 also offers exciting improvements for developers. The browser now supports the ARIA attribute aria-keyshortcuts across platforms for the first time, allowing you to define keyboard shortcuts for interactive elements—a major step toward accessible web design.

Additionally, Firefox now supports the CSS Custom Highlighting API, which has been available in Chrome for some time. This API allows you to highlight arbitrary text areas on a webpage and style them individually without altering the DOM structure.

A month ago, Mozilla had already announced the discontinuation of the popular Read-it-Later service Pocket effective July 8, 2025. As a consequence, Firefox 140 removes the Pocket icon from the toolbar and disables Pocket integration in new tabs.
