AMD or Intel: The New InfinityBook Pro 15 in Direct Comparison - TUXEDO Computers

Customers often ask themselves (or us) why many of our notebooks and desktop computers are available with both Intel and AMD processors and what the key differences are.

Today, we would like to explore this question using the brand new InfinityBook Pro 15 - INTEL as an example and explain what you should look out for when making your purchase decision.

No Differences in Chassis, Cooling And Display

Whether AMD or Intel: both laptops come in exactly the same housing, which in the case of the InfinityBook Pro 15 is a metallic gray or matte black full aluminum chassis, depending on the choice of physical keyboard layout (ANSI or ISO).

With a total height (housing plus display) of less than 20mm and a weight of 1.75 kg, the Linux Ultrabook prioritizes maximum portability without sacrificing a sturdy metal construction or a comfortably large screen.

It measures 15.3 inches diagonally and combines a razor-sharp resolution of 2560x1600 pixels in a work-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio with a refresh rate of up to 240 Hz, 100% sRGB color space coverage, and a high screen brightness of 500 nits.

Under the hood, AMD and Intel TUXEDO notebooks usually share the same internals (apart from sometimes slightly different motherboard layouts) and equivalent cooling systems.

Regarding the InfinityBook Pro 15, due to its ultra thin housing, this consists of two 7 mm fans and equally small heatsinks, connected by two heat pipes, which ensure quiet operation under low load or push the CPUs to up to 90 watts of sustained power at full fan speed.

The Main Difference: The Processor

Unsurprisingly, the main difference between the AMD and Intel versions lies in the choice of the processor: while the InfinityBook Pro 15 - AMD is equipped with Ryzen AI 300 CPUs up to the AI 9 HX 370 with 12 cores, the Intel model features the Core Ultra 7 255H with 16 cores.

Due to different processor architectures, a direct comparison is not that easy: While the Intel model appears to be superior on paper with 4 additional cores, the HX 370 compensates for this with - simplified - the ability to process two tasks, or “threads,” in parallel with each core - so-called „Simultaneous Multithreading“, for a total of 24 virtual processing units.

In contrast, the Core Ultra 7 255H features a heterogeneous core architecture with 6 performance-optimized cores and 10 power-saving efficiency cores.

Which processor should you choose? In most cases, AMD and Intel processors deliver comparable performance in the same TUXEDO notebook - if this is not the case, we will indicate this in our product description.

In the InfinityBook Pro 15, AMD’s top tier CPU, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, performs about 15% faster than the Intel Core Ultra 7, which is why the AMD model should be chosen if best-possible performance is your priority.

However, there are often differences between AMD and Intel processors in terms of energy efficiency and battery life, as well as hardware features (e.g., RAM speed, USB or HDMI version, etc.), which we will look at below.

(Hardly Any) Differences in Integrated Graphics

Intel and AMD CPUs naturally come with their own integrated graphics processors. These are primarily designed to be power-efficient and for less computationally intensive tasks.

Both the Intel and AMD versions of the InfinityBook Pro 15 feature relatively fast graphics that are sufficient for moderately intense image and video editing and less demanding PC games at reduced display resolution and quality settings. Both the Intel Arc 140T and AMD’s Radeon 890M are largely on par here, so the purchase decision should not be based on this factor.

If you need higher graphics performance for demanding games, graphics or video editing, we recommend waiting for the upcoming InfinityBook Max 15 with substantially faster NVIDIA graphics or considering the even faster and quieter, but also heavier Stellaris 16.

Differences in RAM, Ports and Battery Life

Besides CPU and integrated graphics (iGPU), AMD and Intel notebooks often differ in terms of ports and RAM compatibility: While the InfinityBook Pro 15 - AMD is powered by DDR5–5600 RAM, the Intel counterpart even supports slightly faster DDR5–6400 RAM. Both models come with each two upgradable and repairable RAM and SSD storage modules.

Another small but noteworthy deviation can be found in the supported HDMI standard: On the driver side, AMD supports only HDMI 2.0 (4K@60Hz) on Linux (HDMI 2.1 on Windows), while Intel laptops achieve 120 Hz at the same resolution (HDMI 2.1).

The USB-C port at the back only differes in branding though: Both USB4 (AMD) and Thunderbolt 4 (Intel) offer the same functionality.

In terms of power consumption and battery life, there can sometimes be significant differences between Intel and AMD, as can be seen in the Stellaris 16 - Gen7, which - for a high-end notebook - lasts a respectable 6 hours with AMD, but reaches even 8 hours during light usage with Intel.

The InfinityBook Pro 15 - Gen10 on the other hand does not exhibit these differences: both models are almost equally power-saving and allow around 10 hours of light use away from the power outlet

Bottom Line: Spoiled For Choice

In terms of chassis, display, fan noise and processor performance, TUXEDO notebooks with AMD or Intel processors are generally on a par with each other, leaving you spoiled for choice when it comes to brand preference.

However, there are often differences in connectivity (Thunderbolt, HDMI standard, RAM speed) and battery life, which is why you should keep an eye on that, if those deviations matter to you. While connectivity also differs on both InfinityBook Pro 15 models, battery life is largely on par with Intel and AMD.
