How do we test TUXEDO OS?

At TUXEDO, it is not only the hardware that is extensively tested – our operating system TUXEDO OS is also subject to constant development and testing.

We are in the enviable position of being able to test our operating system TUXEDO OS on the very hardware for which it is primarily made. When we started developing TUXEDO OS, we chose Ubuntu LTS as a solid base, but were convinced from the start that Ubuntu’s package base is far from up-to-date in some places, which we need in order for the strengths of our notebooks to be fully effective for you as a customer.

More up-to-date than Ubuntu

So, we decided to offer some components in our TUXEDO repository in always up-to-date versions. We borrow the desktop environment KDE Plasma, which we use, from the KDE neon project, which is also based on Ubuntu. Packages such as Mesa and PipeWire, which support our hardware well, are packaged by us from their respective upstream.

For owners of Nvidia dGPUs, we also provide a driver that is as up-to-date as possible. With our customized kernel, we stay very close to the official mainline kernel. Since we do not use Canonical’s Snap package format at all, we also provide a current Firefox in the Debian package format.

Note: For more details on the differences between TUXEDO OS, Kubuntu and KDE Neon, see our knowledge base.

Elaborate test regime

All these alterations to Ubuntu’s package standard require special attention when interacting with the other components and therefore a stringent test regime to be able to deliver the desired stability. To ensure this, our developers are constantly building new images of TUXEDO OS and testing them in everyday use.

On every Monday, the mirror servers are aligned with those of Ubuntu and the updates are tested again before being rolled out to customers and, if problems occur, these are fixed before the rollout. The only exceptions to the weekly cycle are security updates, which are rolled out daily. With all these measures, we try to ensure that when you update your device, it is as up-to-date as possible on key components and still everything works as it should.
