Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: What's new?

On 25 April 2024, Canonical released the new, long-term supported operating system version Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. As usual, the new LTS version offers at least five years of support, during which you will receive multiple updates from Ubuntu. If required, this period can be extended to up to 12 years via Ubuntu Pro starting with 24.04.1.

As you probably know, TUXEDO OS always keeps important packages on more up-to-date versions than Ubuntu. In addition to the TUXEDO kernels, this also includes the graphics stack with drivers and the Mesa graphics library, the Bluetooth stack, the PipeWire media server and always up-to-date browsers such as Firefox or Chrome.

What’s new with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS?

Ubuntu 24.04 comes to you with Kernel 6.8 and GNOME 46 Users who are still on Ubuntu 22.04, will find a new installer, first introduced with Ubuntu 23.04, which is very easy to use and can automate installations on several computers on the basis of a YAML file if desired.

Ubuntu App Centre

The new Ubuntu App Centre replaces the previous Snap Store. In the setup dialogue, a new dialogue asks for settings on various aspects of accessibility. With this new software management, only packages in Snap format can be installed. If you prefer the Debian format, you will have to use the command line. Incidentally, TUXEDO OS does not use snaps at all.

Installation

The installation type is still minimal by default; users who want a full installation must use the extended selection in the installer. However, all the games from the Gnome Games collection that were previously always pre-installed, have been removed.

With the extended functions of the installer, LVM can be used open or encrypted and ZFS can be used as an experimental option. If Secure Boot is activated, there is the option of full encryption via TPM.

Security

In terms of security, AppArmor has been integrated in version 4 and the kernel function Unprivileged User Namespace has been restricted. The source configuration for Ubuntu has been moved from /etc/apt/sources.list to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources in the more feature-rich deb822 format.

As a result of the XZ-Utils backdoor, openssh in Ubuntu is no longer dependent on libsystemd, which reduces the number of dependencies and makes it less vulnerable to future security issues.

NetworkManager now uses Netplan as the default storage backend for the settings. Now available as Netplan 1.0, the network management tool developed by Canonical supports advanced features such as simultaneous WPA2 and WPA3 configurations and new parameters for status queries.

Upgrade

Users of Ubuntu 23.10 were offered an automatic upgrade to 24.04 shortly after the release. Users of 22.04 LTS will only be offered the automatic upgrade when Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS is released, which is scheduled for 15 August.

The research effort for application specific setup is immense and not manageable at the current time. Basic compatibility questions e.g. are of course still welcome!

Taxes and customs outside the EU:

For orders outside the EU there might be additional duties, taxes or charges needed to be paid by the customer. These don't have to be paid to the supplier, but to local authorities. Please check for any details with your local customs or tax authorities before ordering! But as a benefit you don't have to pay German taxes, this means you save up to 19%!
Due to the Brexit and the associated changes, there may be delays of several days in customs clearance on site for deliveries to the UK. This is not within our sphere of influence, so we ask for your understanding.
